Hi,
Just got up this morning, and had loads of errors on my pc. Had been downloading over night, but when i got up i had CRC errors. Only thing i have installed since yesterday was some windows spyware app (something like defender i think) could this cause the problem? Or is my drive on its way out. If the drive is going, whats my chances of getting the data off and onto another drive? Cheers

Are you still booting into windows? Start backing up right away.
Just hope that the information you want to recover is not on the bad sectors on your HD.
After the backup, do a low level format and sometimes that will recover the HD.
Well first off what are some syste details?
I have seen this merely because the chipset drivers were not updated.
Your hardware may be perfectly fine,
Have you checked the harddrive using the manufacturer's diagnostic tools?
Bad RAM has caused CRC errors for me before too, had one in the other day to have a burner installed and I was getting CRC errors all over the place trying to install Nero, replaced the stick of RAM and it all went away...

Is the HD recognized by the motherboard? At least viewable after bootup?
Might be a case of recover what you can and avoid the bad sectors. Try running chkdsk and so forth. Generally it'll take a long time with bad drives.
If you're at the point of throwing the drive away you really have nothing to lose. At least it's a storage drive, but all recovery rules apply. Boot with the drive upside down and see if you could recover some files. If not, wrap your drive up and put it in the freezer for the night and connect it back up and see if you'll let you recover your data.
These are just some random things that people have tried for data recovery. You could probably find some of these methods when searching google for data recovery. Sometimes it works, most times it does not.
All else fails, depending on how important that data is, you might want to send it to a recovery third party and see if they could do some recovery for you.

Wrap up the HD in a towel and put it in the freezer for the night. Next day put the drive back into the computer and start copying and moving files right away as time is not your friend. Work quickly.
Some people have reported that this has worked for them. For me, it made a unbootable drive bootup one time for me, but I was not able to recover any files from it. The situation is always that it makes the data recoverable for a very short time and only works one or two times.
But keep in mind that it might not work at all.

If you have the time, search google and you'll see that this is one method. Another is to drop the drive from about an one inch to an one foot height on a hard surface.
Again, since you have nothing to lose it's not really going to change anything other than that you might get lucky. You might want to search google just to confirm that I'm not pulling your leg. :)
I've also had luck with the freezer method. I usually get about 5 minutes and I have to put it back in the freezer.
If this is the case, I found the data is recovered with minimal corruption. It just hinges on how long the drive lasts...
