Actually it is a surprise, Realtek are a solid installation but if you don't know the make of the chip on your mainboard what has lead you to try to install Realtek drivers,? codecs by themselves are little value without any driver or other software to interface with it and it's rediculous to suggest a complete re-install just to get sound working.,
Perhaps you could post some details of your system that's causing you problems, otherwise nobody has anything to point to as a possible cause.

I would agree Realtek is a very stable and easily installed sound system.
Not all realtek will work with the realtek files . Sometimes you need specific ones from your motherboard manufacturer.
Please provide motherboard model.

Dont immediately see any 'Realtek' devices listed, the sound chip is INtel so you should be downloading the driver from them.

I would go to the Acer site, Look up your model of system and under support I beleive you can download the drivers for your Acer system
It looks like an Intel sound solution from what I read in your post, No mention of realtek anywhere

I have an Intel® Desktop Board D865GVHZ, and the sound card uses Realtek's drivers and applications. As far as I am concerned, the Intel onboard sound cards use (or are) Realtek's, and use their drivers and apps. I would recomend going to the Acer's website to look for driver updates. Or if your pc has a System Recovery suite, like mine does, or if you are not sure, ask the customer service about it. I use a program called Application & Driver Recovery within a Start menu folder called system recovery.

Maybe a dumb question but did you remove all the other drivers? You may
have a conflict with drivers for your sound.

I'd uninstall all audio devices in Device Manager, reboot, and let the system re-detect devices. If the sound is still flaky, run sfc /scannow from a command prompt. You'll probably be prompted to insert your XP CD by System File Checker.
