Recovering pictures after format

I hope I can get some help here
I copied some pictures from my XD picture card using my USB card reader
After that I used Windows to format the card, then when I put the card back into my Olympus camera , I ran the format command on the card
I had to reinstall Windows and I forgot to do a fresh back up of my pictures folder
Is there any way to run recovery software on the XD picture card or are the pictures gone, I hav tried PC inspector to no avail
I have that baaad feeling my pictures are gone
