another Motherboard/ cpu compatibility

will a p4 cpu /800 work in a motherboard that has 400/533 speeds.
will the cpu 'slow down' and work in such a motherboard.

I am pretty sure the BIOS on that board will not accept the CPU just on the basis of its CPUID.
