Is there any way in Windows 2000 to set a local policy for all profiles to have the same power policy for all profiles logged in?
For every signon used, the monitor is set to go into standby mode after 20 minuits. I want to be able to change this to, say 60! for every new account that logs into that box!!
I dont want to go through a global policy since my corporate office wont give me rights to the pdc..

never tried but right at the bottom of this mentions power options.
I came across this myself, but it requires you to use a gpo (group policy object) which unfortunately has to be set at the domain level.
For some reason MS have locked it down so you cannot configure this at a local level. If I could even find a reg setting that I could place in the startup folder and suppress it. but the power setting in the registry are confusing.

Of course you know editing the registry is dangerous. More so because the edit you are requesting involves loading user profiles. You know how grumpy people can become if you mess their stuff up.

Setup: Permissions to edit registry
Performance Steps
1. Navigate to Start\Run and type REGEDIT.
2. Highlight the HKEY\USERS registry key
3. From the FILE menu select LOAD HIVE
4. Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\Default User and select NTUSER.DAT and click OK.
5. Next you are prompted for a name. Type NTUSER and press enter.
6. You will now see a NTUSER registry key under HKEY\USERS.
7. Highlight the NTUSER\Control Pannel\PowerCfg key.
8. In the right pane you will see Current Power Policy with a value of 0-4, change this to a value of 1 for laptop, 3 for always on, 0 for home ofice.
9. Highlight the NTUSER key.
10. From the FILE menu select UNLOAD HIVE. Confirm that you want to close all sub-keys.
11. From the FILE menu select EXIT.
12. Log off current user and test registry edit by logging in as a user and check the power options in the control panel. It should be set to always on.
13. End Task.
Note: This is for XP but the principle should be the same for 2K. You should be aware that for every user profile already created there is a NTUSER.DAT file. You would need to repeat the process for each user. The default user is to take care of future users.
But it doesn't stop them changing the power profile back does it?
I went ahead and locked down the display settings with gpedit. I think that should keep their crummy hands from totaling the system.

Health and safety - a person should be allowed to adjust the display settings to suit them....
very true, I will take this into consideration and I will configure the resolution and monitor hz before it is used. This is for an industrial enviroment and these users have very little computer skills. they would not know what to change and if they did change anything they would most likely mess it up some more.
Beware of making assumptions like that....
