startup programs in w2k

i have unchecked several startup items in msconfig (things i don't have or use any more plus two that have no description) and everything starts up ok. i get the system utility appear with a warning about selective startup etc; i then get the msconfig screen which i have to click cancel.

looking in regedit, HKLM/software/microsoft/windows/run (blah blah) - the unchecked items do not appear.

my thought was if i can delete the unwanted items permanently from the registry i could stop using selective startup.

any ideas where i can find those 6 items?

Removed startup items are usually found in the Run- (note the MINUS SIGN) key in the Registry after disabling them with MSCONFIG. They may be in other areas as well.

Ferrit's advise is correct..if you don't want to see the msconfig startup screen each time you boot the computer(which I think is the problem you are describing) just check the box to not show it or start msconfig when you boot the computer. (This being win2k, which doesn't use msconfig, I assume you imported the xp msconfig rather than the win98 version?)

nothing in run or run once that shouldn't be there.

there's no run(-) key in that location.

it is w2k and the msconfig command is the one i used from start/run. i have several tabs, one is services, one is startup; the unchecked ones are listed at the bottom. all the checked ones appear in regedit under run. as far as i can remember i've not added anything from any other version.

the [problem] with ticking the do not show box is the utility will not run and the items i unchecked will be active again. so, if possible, i would like to remove the items from the registry before doing that. this thread relates to the fact i cannot find them!!!

wierd stuff. no wonder i changed my job (out of IT)..... :kiss:

Use hijackthis then!! Shows ALL startup items, one tick and delete.

download and install windows startup inspector like I previously mentioned. this will list every program that is starting on bootup. It will give you the opportunity to remove said program.

And according to your log, why not remove microsoft osa, realplay, acrotray, and qttask? They don't need to be starting, just hogging resources.

re enable them, then run the hijack log or get mPC's suggestion

got rid of the apps mentioned (realtray, osa, etc) by disabling.

re-enabled the offending progs; disabled them with the startupwindows util; also learnt that mobsync.exe is a waste and got rid of that too.

the lines dont appear in regedit but they did with msconfig (unticked) and SUW (unticked). i dont have msconfig running at boot - hurrah!

Microsoft Mobile Synchronization Manager.
One annoying programme you will find running in W2K/XP is mobsync.exe.
This is because it is set by default to synchronise your home page at log-on.
To stop this, run the programme "Synchronise" from your "Start/Programmes/Accessories
Menu. Select setup, and uncheck the synchronisation options, then deselect the option to synchronise your home page. From explorer select Tools/Folder Options/Offline Files: deselect the "Enable Offline Files" option. When you reboot you will find the programme is no longer running by default.

To the best of my knowledge, Windows 2000 doesn't have an msconfig..you have to use sysedit or import the msconfig.exe from windows xp

Mr_Miyagi is well used to msconfig, I seem to remember him using it with win95.
