Ive just brought a new monitor that has a DVI connection. Ive never used this before and not sure how to set it up. My video card has DVI out so I connected up the cable to it but when I fired up the pc the monitor wouldnt detect a signal. I had to connect the standard cable up instead. Is there a way to enable this DVI somewhere?
Depends on your video card... it might think it is a second monitor (dual head video card)... so you would have to set it up to change it to output to the DVI. What video card is it?
The video card is a NVIDIA GEForce 5200. It does show diplay 1 of 2 and 2 of 2 but if I try to switch to 2 it switches back. (I ahve both montior cbales plugged in at the moment.)
How do I chnage it to use the DVI??
OK and the make and model of your monitor?
Have you checked in nView to see what output type is selected?
The monitor is a View sonic VA1912wb. In Nview it says single display Viewsonic VA1912w (1 of 2)
I think you may need to select the input type (page 10 on the page or 13/22 in adobe pages)

Okay I tried the input menu option Noo Noo but it just flashes black then a small bar with analog in text flashes up so I assume its just switching back to analog mode.
I dont have the Nvidia software installed and I havent tried it with just the dvi cable again so will give both of them a try.
Ive downloaded the latest software for my nvidia card but I cant seem to find anywhere mention of dvi. If I disconnect the normal montior cable and boot up I get the no analog signal error. Why cant I just use this dvi option?
DVI is just the same as using a standard cable, except its better. Ideally you should just have to unplug the standard analog cable and replace it with the DVI cable and it should work.
The only think that you 'may' need to do is select the input type from your monitors onboard control panel. I've been using my ViewSonic for almost 5years, and always on DVI, same with my 2 other LCDs, they've never requried anything special to work with a DVI cable over a standard analog cable.
Not familiar with the specific monitor in question, but sometimes the monitor settings need to be changed while the computer is off or the VGA cable disconnected, otherwise it keeps detecting the analog signal and won't accept the change even after a shut down, cable switch and reboot.
I'd put my money on either a bad DVI cable OR bad connector one end or the other (TV or NVidia card).
Cable check first imo.
How much money are you putting on it:) If it were the cable or the dvi connector then the NVIDIA control panel wouldnt detect it at all but it does detect it as a dual display. Trouble is when I try to switch over to this it switches back. If I disconnect the analog cable and try to boot up it doesnt detect the dvi connection either.Quote:

btw, the Nvidia software may see the Nvidia card and know it has dual outputs but SO WHAT!
The Nvidia software doesn't see the monitor, only the card (afaik).
And the card connector, the cable or the monitor connector could have one or more BAD 'pins/recepticles' and BOOM!

yeh but why then when I disconnect the DVI cable it doesnt show the dual monitors anymore? It only shows them when both monitor cables are connected. Therefore it must detect the monitor or maybe at the very least the cable.
