It shouldn't need a driver if you are using the firewire connection. What you will need with Vista is an editing program of some sort because home basic does not include any movie making software. There are a number of editors around, make sure you get one that is vista compatible.

the computer came with Windows Movie Maker. i am able to upload still images from the camcorder but the computer doesn't detect anything when i switch to video mode.

try going here and then navigating to your manual.
Do you have the firewire cable connected? Is there a 1394 device shown in device manager?
That suggests you're using USB? As NooNoo says, for video you use the Firewire (DV) connection and the video software should see the camera.Quote:

If you are using the i-link/firewire cable you don't need drivers. What's the problem?
