My husband has a dell inspiron 1501 with xp. Everytime I try to copy files to a cd it automatically formats a new cd with Roxio. The problem is that if I use this disk on my dell desktop it cannot read all the files on the cd - not too good. How do I copy files without using Roxio and just use windows explorer? I would appreciate any help as I am trying to create a backup of my tax files and I would like them to be read on any computer and not just ones that have Roxio.

Roxio is adaptec.
What version is it?
Open the program then at the top.
It should be under help and about.
you may be able to right click the files and choose send to
the cdrw.
I have never got used to Roxio products (nor to the Built in Burn feature of XP)
I always use deepburner which is pretty intuitive and easy to use

the free version is morethan enough for basic needs (burning data, iso images and audio cd's)

I used to use software that came with XP until I got tired of having to use seven cd's to reinstall windows and all that other HP garbage, so after my last clean install of windows I went looking for free software to burn files. The first program was a miss, but the second one works awesome. It has a right-side menu which is similar to windows' side panel which makes the program very easy to deal with. I got it from download.com heres the link:

towdesign, the info ferrit requested would be really helpful. At a guess, though, it sounds like you're using CD-RWs (not CD-Rs) and running Direct CD on your system. If you are just using CD-Rs, Direct CD shouldn't rear its head, and you should be able to right-click a file and send it to the drive or drag and drop files through Windows Explorer.
You need a udf reader - roxio have one here
To ensure you can read them, he needs to close the disk - this is an option in Direct Cd. Direct CD enables you to use a cd as a giant floppy disk... and therefore if it's a CDRW you are using, you can erase and rewrite to the CD about 50 times before the cdrw becomes useless.
If you intend the data burned to be permanent, don't use Direct CD, rather create a Data CD using the roxio main program.
