After solving my XP problem (replacing ntfs.sys) I still have other applications that crash (Outlook, Firefox and some others). The problems are related to EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION or AccessViolationException. That seems to be a memory problem. Is that correct and if so, should I replace my memory?
Run a memory tester... like this one You can download a bootable iso, burn it to CD and boot with it and it goes straight into the memory test. It does several tests, let it run for at least an hour.

Well, after 2 hours still busy. Found this far:

You need to replace one or more of the RAM sticks. Run the test again, this time with just one stick in one slot. Then move that same stick to the next slot and run it again. When you have tested each slot with the one stick, repeat with the other stick(s) of RAM until you find the faulty stick and/or faulty slot.
Yes the test starts over automatically and will keep going until you press escape.

I replaced the new memory sticks with the original ones and re-run the memory test, no errors. So the memory was bad indeed.
What can go wrong with memory?
As with all electronics, the components are subject to decay and static electricity. So if you were mucking about inside the case, it is possible that you zapped the RAM with static electricity you naturally store.
