My friend has a P200,64 ram, with a SIS6326 PCI 8mb video card. When he starts downloading anything off the net his monitor goes all crazy and nothing is visible, only lines and blocks of colour. I had a look at his PC and I was surprised to note there is NO IRQ allocated for his video card? Is this acceptable? Is this what could be causing his problem? I updated his drivers for the video card, then tried to allocate an IRQ but it would not allow manual adjustment?
Please help!!
my first rule of troubleshooting is swap suspected bad for known good. before you start digging around too much, hook another monitor up to his machine to see if the problem occurs on different monitors. If it does, then check for latest drivers and also check that the refresh rates the card is producing are supported by the monitor bump it down to 60hz just to be safe. (trying to display at 85hz on a monitor that only supports 75hz will give all sorts of display problems) if that doesn't work, then swap the card for a known good video card and see what happens.
Most SIS6326 PCI cards I've seen have a jumper near the top edge just right of center for enabling/disabling IRQ. The presence or not of an IRQ is not critical to it's proper functioning. It sounds like what you're experiencing is just a defective card. I've seen dozens of these cards fail in just the same or similar ways....

I think it can be a problem. If windows generally is stable other than when downloading or using the modem then it sounds like an irq issue to me.
If you can't adjust or set the irq of the video try changing the modems, appropriate chipset patches too.
You will need to enable it in bios.

you present a situation that sounds like an IRQ conflict, (i.e. problems occur when online because the modem IRQ is conflicting with video)which isn't possible because the video card doesn't have an IRQ assigned. Also the original post never specified the user was even using dial up. He could have a broadband connection and thus, no analog dial up modem.
This card, as Sowulo pointed out (and other video cards too) Does NOT need an IRQ assigned to work properly. I had the same card built onboard on a motherboard some time ago and it worked perfectly fine without assigning an IRQ.
Most likely it is a driver issue or defective hardware (monitor or video card)

Don't get your shorts in a tangle I only said 'can'....BUT what do you think the IRQ re-mapping bit of the via 4-in-1 does???
If you can assign an irq then do, preferably if you can on its own not shared.
BTW my money 'kato' is on Heffo being on dial up, if he could afford b-b then he? would probably have a better machine... :p
Yes, it is dial up on a 56k Ext modem!!
Yes, it was the video card. Replaced the card with a Matrox PCI card been running for a couple of days with NO problems. Thanks to all for input on this post.
