I have an acer 5630WLMI laptop. it came with vista home premium (sux) and i put windows XP on it.
the drive stopped burrning cd's
it thinks it is and then gets to the verification and fails.
when burning its only a green light not the usual red one.
and acer dont have drivers for it.
can any1 help?
my mate spoke of a generic driver that will make pretty much any cd/dvd drive work.
any light on this? much thanx.

What are you using to burn cds?
Try using the free burning version at http://www.deepburner.com
CD drives don't need drivers - they use the same drivers that drive your hard drives. They do use aspi, which some people call drivers. Try deepburner first, then we will go digging.
i tried nero 7, nero 5, nero 6 and some old nero that came with my old lite-on 52x24x52 drive in my other pc.
and i had nero 5 with vista and it workd, and nero 7 wif vista and it workd,
just xp doesnt.
event the windows burning thing doesnt work.
it reads cd's and dvd's just fine.

Nero 6 or 7 should be used with XP.
Try a burn with Nero now and post the burn log.
atm i have nero express installed. i think its nero 5. cant remember what it said on the disk.

You can download updates from Nero for Nero 5 -- open nero, click help, then about Nero.

ok update.
neither deepburner or nero burns audio cd's, no errors or anything but the cd comes up as a blank again after burning.
when i burnt a dvd it came up wif an error or 2 but it seems like the disc still worked...
any ideas?
my only good idea is 2 throw the thing out the window and build a custom pc that WORKS...

If you want help, you are going to have to be more accurate about what happened and post exactly what the error message(s) said.

they come up with no errors. its standard burning log, thinks it works but then when i put it into another pc drive or if i even look at it on this it see's it as a blank cd...
That would imply the cd burning laser has gone kaput.
so why does it burn mp3 cd's and dvds (but w/ errors)?

Wait a minute, you said it didn't burn cds. Now you are saying you can burn data cds?
If it's 8 months old, it's in warranty - why are you not talking to your laptop vendor?
cause they dont have a clue they want me 2 send it in, and all they said they will do is load vista test and load xp and test, i dont want my fkn pc wiped when they dont even know the problem.
as i said. it burns mp3 cd's, no issue, dvds but some messages with it and regular cd it thinks it burnt it no problem but it hasnt written a thing to the disk.
If you haven't got a back up of what's on your PC, you will lose your data... hard drives die - it's a fact of life.
Given what you have said so far, I am not surprised they haven't a clue, you haven't exactly been accurate with the symptoms or with the error messages.
Until you provide a nero log, I can't help. You haven't told me what the error messages are. If the cd is coming out blank, have you actually got the drive set as the recorder? Does Nero ask you for a filename? If so, you have got it set to burn to hard drive.
You said you loaded XP - which version? Have you got all your windows updates?

yes its burnin 2 the cd i know when its set to image recorder...
there are no error logs for cd. it thinks it does it 100% right...
dvd's just have verification failed, and like one "filename.extensionbkaf" is different, not added or something.
deep burner on dvd's doesnt give that issue.
but still wont burn damn cd's

this is using nero express.
the cd has no errors, it sees it as perfect burning.
just there is nothing goin on the cd for some reason.
eg for the dvd it said.

A burn log is made EVERY time with Nero. C:\ProgramFiles\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory.log
"Burning" to the Image Recorder means creating a file on the hard drive. If the destination menu in your burning software doesn't show your physical drive, then either the drive isn't supported by the software or, most likely choice here, the drive is shot.
slgrieb i did say earlier i do know the dif between a image recorder and the drive and it IS ON TEH DRIVE!

as for dvd's im yet to burn another 1.
Whether the burn is successful or not, a log is created.
