There is probably a very interesting story surrounding this man. My guess would be, judging from whom his patrons and friends were, that he was probably a Catholic recusant, which may be why he sought to fly under the radar screen as it were.
He lived in very interesting times - interesting as in the Chinese curse, May you live in interesting times!
There is a hypothesis, with a reasonable, although certainly not conclusive, body of circumstantial evidence to support it, that the reason we know so blessed little about Shakespeare, a contemporary of Harriot, is that he himself wanted it that way. Some scholars think that Shakespeare had a very good Jesuit education in an underground school in the heart of Catholic recusant northern England; if this were true it would strip away the mystery of how a person of no apparent education could write so well and so knowledgably.

Alot of stuff got invented and forgotten... the steam power was experimented with around 2000 years ago... but why both building engines when you had a plentiful supply of slaves?
If you are not accustomed to Jazz singers, Johnny Hartman may sound a bit odd. Rock/pop is largely about singing out of control. Hartman is intensely in control. If you stop listening to the words and think of his voice as a tenor saxophone, you might get some idea of what his control is aimed at.
Not so keen on the second tune here, but the first one, a blues number, is definitely a song for the current economy.
