It is a well known fact that metal expands under heat. If you held a solid piece of iron, that is in the shape of a doughnut, over extreme heat, will the hole in the centre of the iron doughnut grow larger, smaller, or will it remain the same?
__________
It will grow larger. As the iron doughnut expands, it keeps the same proportions it had before it was heated. The same principle applies when you can't open a stubborn metal lid on a jar. By heating the lid under hot water, the lid (including the inner circumference) expands, allowing it to be easily removed.
A multiple guess question.....cool!Quote:

Expanding outwards would make the outside larger, and inwards making the inside smaller, but it would also expand around, makeing the inside larger. Now, I do not remember my physics very well, so this is just a guess.....

If it takes a man one hour to dig a hole two metres long, two metres wide, and two metres deep, how long would it take the same man to dig a hole four metres long, four metres wide, and four metres deep, assuming he digs at the same rate of speed?
__________
Eight hours. It takes twice as long to double the length, twice as long to double the width, and twice as long to double the depth. To find cubic measurement you multiply length x width x height; therefore, on the first hole, one hour equals 2m x 2m x 2m = 8 cubic metres. On the second hole, the formula is 4m x 4m x 4m = 64 cubic metres.
I'm guessing eight hours. In one hour he can remove 8 cubic meters of dirt so it would take 8 hours to remove 64 cubic meters.Quote:

That last one put you in third place, Mindwarp. ;)
