I am currently running a dual Pentium Pro 200 with no cooling fans. Seems OK, but I will replace the fans shortly.

not quite the same, but heard a tech tell me that he's seen baked k6-2's run fine. I'm gonna try that next week https://forums.windrivers.com/ https://forums.windrivers.com/ https://forums.windrivers.com/ https://forums.windrivers.com/ https://forums.windrivers.com/ https://forums.windrivers.com/

Ahhh nostalgia. I remember our 286-12 1MB ram, 40MB HD
When I was working at CR, we got in a bunch of Compaqs that had the heatsinks just glued on. On a couple, the glue had weakened, and the heatsinks kept falling off, often while they were in use! Whoops! They actually would run more or less fine without them, at least in the air conditioned store. They probably wouldn't have worked as well if I didn't keep the store temp at around 65. https://forums.windrivers.com/

Had a P120 come into the shop, no heatsink/fan, customer said the case had never been opened, must have been runnning for 3 years or so.
Had an AMD Thunderbird 800. No Heatsink/no fan, customer decided he would build it himself. Cracked the chip in half in 10 seconds or less.

It's not rocket science, it's just a computer.
I ram my AMD K6-2/450 w/a very flaky (sllloooowww, sometimes even stopping) fan for an unknown ammount of time, maybe 2-3 months as my Eudora mail server on WinNT4.0 sp6 Server...and it still does great to this day! But it does run 10 degrees warmer than my K6-2/550 box running WinNT 4.0 sp6 Workstation. Our Gw2k P-166 used the Power Supply fan to cool everything, including the CPU...so I added a fan-type heat sink to it....helped lots, much more stable!

Funny you should mention it... Just this past week I was putting together a PentPro200 to set up as my BDC at home (intend to set it up as a Proxy). I started to copy the i386 directory from the cd to the hard drive and left to go to the library. When I came back 2 hours later it was STILL copying files! There's only about 120 MB in the i386 and I thought "What the...". Wondered if the hard drive was hosed or something. You guessed it, the CPU fan was not running. Anyway I let it finish copying the files (it was almost done) and ordered a new fan/heatsink. It runs like a champ now. https://forums.windrivers.com/ https://forums.windrivers.com/ https://forums.windrivers.com/

If I want your opinion, I'll give it to you.
Ran my P3 500 with a non functioning fan for about 6 months before I realized it was really bad. CPU ran just fine, of course the case had 3 fans in it itself.

I've left a 486 on with just a heatsink for sometime. Much like everyone else.
When the pentium came out it got through a windows installation without a heatsink or a fan (I didn't have any at the time and was anxious to try the chip out). After Windows installed the vxd and memory errors came rollin in. Least I know what to look for if a CPU gets to hot.

I traded my Athlon 500MHz (Slot A) to my boss for an Athlon 700MHz... just recently he told me he killed it trying to run it underclocked, just so he wouldn't have to use a fan.
https://forums.windrivers.com/ I cried. I was so upset that he toasted my old processor.

This is an interesting thread in kinda the same vein that the old joke about stabbing your crab lice to death one at a time with an icepick is funny. If you're writing a book, this will make a great chapter, but I'm amazed at the response! :)
Ya mean.................on purpose?
You mean there's another way to get rid of lice?
Well, years actually if you consider the fact that Dell has decided they are special and don't need actual "cpu fans" per-say. They use that retarded case fan tunneled down to a huge heatsink. :D
Yup............shave your head :grin:Quote:
