How much are Techs worth?

I work in the little town of Russellville, Arkansas, and get a measly $7.00 an hour as a bench tech. I started out at $6 in December 1998, and got the raise to $7 as a wedding gift five months later. I've been stuck there ever since. I've got around 4-5 years of experience in desktop support, bench work, and networking. My boss claims that business is too slow to give me a raise, or any other kind of benefits. I have no certs, just experience. The office manager assures me that she called around to the other computer stores in town, and that they are paying their techs the same. I still think I'm getting ripped off.

Do you think I'm worth more than this with the experience I have? I'm to the point now that I'm looking for a job where I can actually get paid more than a secretary doing temp work. *gasp* I love what I do, so I don't want to go work at one of the numerous chicken plants in the area. (Oh Joy!)

I'm underpaid too. Although I love my job I have to quit my current one really soon because of this issue mostly.

Wow ... been with my company for over 2 years. only making $36G's Cdn.

Course I just work a helpdesk. ;)

First I looked around, were all making std. joe blow salary for the everyday tech (position was concidered)

second, ICWU International Computer Workers Union, lets unionize. I call shotty on the president of the Silicone Island and Tech Triangle (NYC, LI, and the binghamton/ ithica area of upstate NY)i got contacts in IBEW local 3 if anyone is really interested.

I was working as a bench and field tech. Also ended up doing network admin for multiple small business' in the area. We got $90 per hour for in field networking work. I got 10 with no benefits (except parts at cost, I was able to do better in quality and price at the shows). We were the best in the business (that's why we had to raise the rates to $90 or be totally swamped). I trained two people who then left for greener pastures so I got disgusted and left myself to go it alone.

I work for an environmental services company as a network admin, pc & printer maintenance, telephone system admin, user training & hand-holding & anything else they decide must be mine because it either plugs into a 110 outlet or uses batteries for 35K a year salaried. I just put in my resignation & am going to live off my 401K for about six months & accumulate any ceritfication I can. Then I am going to maket the heck out of myself to at least double my current salary.

I sit in a cubicle, taking phone calls from Puerto Rico to Hawaii helping people fix thier computers AND printers for a national corporation and I only make 30K/yr. But then I saccraficed a 65k/yr job to move to where there is family and so my wife could start her career too. Now we both make over 65K/yr with her working in the legal profession.

The places I've been techs don't get paid what there worth for 2 main reasons.
1.Management or HR don't really understand and think of techs as custodial or small electronic repaire personel.
2.Too many paper techs have burned them before. :confused:

You're getting paid 60K to be a PC technician? I guess it depends though on if the company you work for is willing to spend the money for good quality work, and they trust you to be their guy to do that. In that case, then I hope you're living up to their expectations.

I pay my assistant $42.50 per hour. (half the billable time)

$30k and loving it cause its a whole lot better than drywall that i was slaving away at all last, hot, miserable summer long. :D

I make almost 40k which in the Boston area in most of the salary surveys, is from 34k to 42k per year for a tech which puts me over midway. I am sure there are techs getting paid 60k but they also have MSCE , CNA etc and also perform the functions of a sysadmin in addition to being a tech. I just fix PC's and create stuff like a bootdisk that automatically finds the NIC and chooses the proper driver.

Iwork as a retail store pc tech, fix,build, repair,upgrade,network. You name it i do it (except mcintosh!)
I make about 25k yr. salary and have health ins paid for.
I wish i was making more but thats my decision to stay.
