Sorry people, None of that worked. But now we have the case of the dissapearing CD rom. Now this was caused by the power supply, swapped it for another, and lo and behold the modem dials out !!

I have seen this at least 30 times before, however it has been quite some time (years even).
Quick question on the telephone cable that you are using: Is it a 2 contact (1 line) or 4 contact (2 line) cable? And are you using a surge protector?
The reason I ask is that I think the problem was corrected by using a phone line with 2 contacts. I think we had a problem with the phone cables with 4 contacts crossing over with come surge protectors and the only way the modem would work was the way you mentioned (by lifting the receiver).
