Mine started with Windows 98, then Windows 2000, then Linux and now Novell 5.0
I bought Mandrake 8.0 and when I tried to install it ( I have a Abit VP6 Mobo with Hot Dog RAID) it said it couldn't recognize my partition setup and gave me a warning message I can't remember at the moment. Then it showed my set up as two seperate HDs and I stopped it right there.
I have my comp running great with Win2K right now and I don't feel like screwing it up, and since I don't know a whole helluva lot about Linux, that's exactly what I'll end up doing. As soon as I get a chance I'll research it further and see what I can do.
My friend has a old HP box with Linux running...
65mhz with 16mb ram I think...Still ran OK
I have a Celeron 466, setup in a rack with Mandrake 7.2 installed. It has an active webserver, FTP Server, and Telnet Daemon running that makes it invaluable in my business. I also have Samba running and it allow all of my network machine to drop stuf in it.
It became more stable after I update the rpms with Hard drake. I have installed Linux on several systems and have found that if you have plug and play stuff enabled, you could have modem and IRQ problems, even if it works with windows. Jumper type modems work the best. Winmodems work the worst.
I have KDE installed, XMM is awesome. I use it as a Juke box also. It outputs to a Sansui AMP that rocks the shop all day long.
I couldnt do any of this stuf in a Windoze box and not have it crash on a regular bases!
I run SuSe 7.1 Pro On an Intel 300 pent. This is on my personal system at home and I love it. Never had any trouble with modem but did have to change out older SB sound card to SB live. It is also the server and gateway for the family net. Installation was a snap and it is rock steady. The only bitch is that Linux is a memory and HD hog. I also run Star Office and have no problems with it. At the shop we are running SuSe 6.2 on our multi-boot bench system and othar than games there is not a lot that MS can do that I cant. Will it ever replace MS? I dont think so but will take a good chunk of the MS market.
Linux is a very good os. but it needs time to be on the same level as windows. Because al game makers make games for windows.winmodems don't work unless you can find drivers to change them to linmodem. kde and gnome are good desktops. it wil run on neerly every p.c. above 486. wat about dual boot, you have to because most of the software is writhen for windows. thats the biggest problem you whil acount.
But if you want only write letters and look around the globe with internet. whel its great.
I have a machine at work with linux loaded for my own purposes but at home I just dont have a use for it yet. It will have to be a bit better rounded before it comes home with me. Games will need to be more accesible in other words. I also have alot to learn still in that OS.
I don't have a seperate system, but i do have it dual booting on my home pc...mandrake 8.0
I have an old P166/64mb ram running redhat 6.2. It's just running apache and bind.
My computer is running at 400Mhz with 256MB RAM is running Redhat Linux and Windows 2000. GOOD!! Im using virtual manager to run Linux in my Windows. NO problem yet.
I use linux extensively. Whenever I got a small office looking for a cheap network environement, i use a linux box as the main server running Apache for web, Samba for file serving, Ipchains for firewalling, sendmail for email serving. Clients love it when you can come in a couple of thousand under the next guy offering an MS solution. Personally I've got a server running slackware and to boxes running mandrake 8.0. Mandrake is really coming up to be one of the distros out there.
I currently use SuSE 7.1 and man do I love it. Have used Redhat 7.0 and grew tired of the constant security updates and bug updates. Don't know about 7.1, may try it soon.
Even my wife, a solid MS user, has asked me to teach her to use linux.
Abit Kt7 750MHz 128RAM. No modem problems . . . no problems at all, none. Yet, MS is constantly freezing, etc. The most difficult thing, IMO, is setting up a printer. But even that is made painless by SuSE.
Go for it; try it. You won't be sorry.

Well, I have used Mandrake and Corel. I found it easy to install, but getting programs to work on it is a pain. it took me like 2 hours to get Fricken AIM to work on it! But, I am trying to learn how to get WINE to work, and if I do,I might switch to linux.
Nearly 2 years ago, I tried out Caldera, Redhat 6.0, Mandrake 6.1, and Corel Linux. For some reason, I lost interest or realized the amount of time it would take to learn more about it.
Now, I think I'm ready to try again with Mandrake 8.0. Just need to find a min 4 gig hd to run on my old Cel 466 system that's just hanging around doing nothing but gathering dust. I think I'll have one in the next couple of weeks then I'll see what it is like again.
