Every instance of a delayed write I have seen, has been because the drive was failing. I would get the manufacturer's diagnostic software and run it.

In my experience usb external anythings cause hanging when there is a power issue with the port.

Have you actually tried the drive directly on an ide cable? Have you swapped out the usb cable?

I just had that exact problem - brand new unit, brand new cable - cable is bad!

FYI
i decided to get a usb2 card and installed it today; my usb 320gb maxtor is now connected and i did a complete backup of one partition - touch wood, no error messages and no crashes. I will now backup up the other partitions!
the only other thing i did was to increase the swap file, on a separate partition. its a minimum 1gb.
hopefully one or t'other is the solution to my initial problem of DWF
