Judging from MS website, it looks like XPhome is still win9x based and WinXP Pro is based on WinNT/2K with major tweaking on the side of being compatible for win9x.
Windows XP is NT based. end of story.
XP home edition will have more things for the dumb users, and will probably play games better than the pro version
To be specific, XP Home has a lot more compatibility for home users integrated. It also is a little less picky about allowing games to access the graphics card. BUT all versions of XP are based on the Win2k Kernel.
As a side note, when you right click on a shortcut to an exe in Win2k SP2 you get a "Compatibility Mode" tab that allows you to set different types of compatibility, though I havent had a chance to test/play with it yet...
Have anyone tried B&W with 2KPro. It runs fine, but some how it gave me a runtime error intermitenly.

A friend of mine had a problem with Duke Nukem 3D...it wouldn't play any sound. However a good portion of games work with 2k.
From what I've heard, here's the basic breakdown of XP Home/Pro:
XP Home: ME + 2K Kernel + New Interface
XP Pro: 2k + a few ME features + New Interface
Both *should* run games just fine. XP Pro probably isn't loaded with some of the crap home is loaded with (movie maker, etc). I'd go with the Pro if I had the budget...
I play just about everything on win2k, The sims, Star wars Xwing Alliance, Star wars battle for naboo, seroius sam, black and white..the list goes on. only a few games that needed patches or would not work in 2k that i have ever found.. even those that say they won't work do!
Nifty little secret..if a game wont work right try this:
1) Right click its shortcut, choose Properties
2) Go to compatibility tab
3) Choose Windows 98 or Windows 95 Layer.
Works on some games, not on others
