innoculateit AV & Norton

I like Norton A.V. or Innoculate AV.
I downloaded the last freeware version Of Inn. A.V. just at the beginning of this month. Talk about perfect timing.
I like Norton A.V. for their rescue disk features. That way, I can use a set of rescue disks in dos mode and let a non-booting system scan overnight to fix or report a virus. This feature helps us real well. But if timing is an important factor, then we attach up a small 4.3 gig tester hd loaded with Windows 98 se set up with either NAV or INNOC for a faster scan on the customer's system.
I'm staying away from Mc cough cough cough fee.

Mcafee is ok, but not much better than Norton; I agree with the gentlemen that spoke earlier about F-Prot. It catches viruses quite easily, but isn't free. I dont' trust the free programs myself, but I don't know about Inoculate-IT I never tried it. I forget the virus we stacked against Mcafee, NOrton and F-Prot. Norton missed it, mcafee saw it but couldn't clean it, F-Prot ate it for lunch <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> Too bad their updates ain't free.. then again, neither is NOrton <IMG SRC="smilies/cool.gif" border="0">

If you're using NAV 5.0, throw it in the garbage! It's virus scanning engines were made more than 3 years ago, and there hasn't been a good program update for it in years.

All you people talking about "my virus program didn't catch it lalalala" should make sure that your program is up-to-date, and not OUT OF DATE, like NAV5.0. If your AV program is fairly recent (lifespan of AV program versions is usually about 2 years), and you keep it up to date, you won't be getting the virus in the first place.

Also..if your AV protection didnt prevent the virus infection, what makes people think that it will detect the virus after-the-fact? Something to ponder...

I wouldn't let a Norton product in the house. Frankly, I think I'd rather have the virus. At least you canget rid of a virus.

When the love bug hit verizon last year,it took norton 12 hours for a solution.It took Mcafee three days...

A. This is a discussion about removing Norton and installing something else. This is not a thread about which is better.

B. Alley, this won't be much help, but I know there was a thread before that gave a way to remove the update expiration for Norton. This way you could still download the updates from www.symantec.com and install them manually. Maybe someone with a better connection (and more time than I have) could find this??

Haaa. Good one Warp_core. I've been there and bought the t-shirt. Norton hangs on like grim death and causes even more problems after you try to uninstall it than it caused while it was running. I've been using and loving InoculateIT PE ever since McAafee bought out Dr. Solomon and messed it up. InoculateIT PE is thourough,unobtrusive and easy to configure and update. All around the best anti-virus program I have used.

With older versions of NAV, you could edit the registry to extend your subscription. I think the latest (2001) has some sort of checking the insure that you haven't cheated and given yourself more time.
As a quick workaround, just reset your system date to a date when your subscription was valid and then run LiveUpdate. It'll let you grab the latest updates, and then you can reset your system date to normal, and NAV won't complain at all.
