I agree completely with donating them to a school, church, etc. If you would prefer, you could also sell them on Ebay. Last fall I sold a box of 100 sticks of RAM. I described it as being almost entirely 1 and 2 meg sticks with a small chance of having a couple of 4 meg sticks. It sold for $17 plus shipping! It never ceases to amaze me how much I get for stuff on Ebay.
The problem with donating to a church/school is that then they also need the rest of the computer for the ram to be any use and it is geting to the point where there are just not any 486s around to donate them with unless you build them from old parts. And I know a lot of stores that just can not afford to give up the manhours when a tech could be doing billable work instead of getting some old 486/33 working. And giving them out as promo is a cheap form of advertising as they may have 100s or even 1000s laying around with no use what so ever. Although 72 pin still has its uses for a few more years if they are at least 8 meg.
One store I worked at used to take 386 and nonworking 486 chips, use a dremel to remove the pins and then use a diamond tip bit and drill press to make the CPUs in to keychains.
Quite a few organizations that accept donations to pass on to people won't take that 486 or 386 off your hands anymore.
