I had another thought.
When this happens again, drop to a command prompt and type
"telnet geocities.com 80"
If that doesn't work, type
"telnet geocities.com:80"
If you get a "connection refused" at any time, then something is actively blocking port 80 (http) connections from your Win98 PC.
Then I guess there is something blocking that port, or all the others. None of my other apps that can connect to the internet will connect at thoes times. It's not just websites.Quote:

Ok. If you try the same telnet command from the box that never drops off the Internet, do you receive a connection refused?

XP
Network card 1 - connected to cable modem shares connection to Network card 2
You should use a firewall on this connection !
Network Card 2 :
Should have IP: 192.168.0.1
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS1: 192.168.0.1
DNS2: your ISP Main DNS (e.g. 24.25.195.1 for the main RoadRunner DNS in San Diego area)
Make sure there's no firewall on this connection !!!
Windows 98 Box :
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default GatewayL 192.168.0.1
DNS1: 192.168.0.1
DNS2: your ISP Main DNS (e.g. 24.25.195.1 for the main RoadRunner DNS in San Diego area)
after you have everything setup properly check the following things:
1. You can ping each computer from the other computer using both NetBIOS name and IP address:
e.g:
a. ping 192.168.0.1 form the Win98 and ping 192.168.0.2 from the XP.
b. ping NetBIOS name of WinXP from the Win98 and Ping NetBIOS name of the Win98 from the WinXP.
2. You can ping external computers usiing IP's and DNS names:
C:\>ping 24.25.195.1

if and when your connection drops you can also try a simple traceroute using IP addresses and DNS and see if's a DNS issues or something else:

Thoes above are my exact settings (except the firewall). And the pinging and tracerouts all passed when my connection dropped.:p But now I'm thinking that it might be the 98 machine's fault cuz when it dissconnects, the XP machine dosen't even notices it (Usually a dissconnect icon appears on the system tray when I intentionaly go offline) When I try to go to the share doc of the 98 machine it would say "Incorrect path" or something. Do you think it's my power supply not giving out enough juce? cuz I recently installed a new hard drive. I use to be fine when I was running XP on both machines.:(

Well at least answer this: ever since I setup this network, all the nodes can't transfer files or recive files through any instant messengers... why? I don't think I can even direct connect using AIM.:confused:
the lack of file transfers is due to the internet sharing, the dropping, no idea.
I did have a 98 box that printed to a xp one. at least it was supposed to. I have seen every 98 / XP setup become such a p.i.a. that Microsoft got a new sale. what you all think, just a way to annoy us into upgrading?
Prince Abaddon, I have the exact same configuration as you, host as XP and client is 98se. I couldn't play LAN games before but after reading this thread, everything works! But I still can't get ICS running, my client computer cannot seem to go on the internet at all.
got any old p75 or newer computers lying around the house?
if so you could set up a linux server which would (hopefull) fix the problem, but setting it up would be a bit of a pain...
I don't have any old computers lying around, wish I can try to see if it works though... I have actually pin pointed the problem to be in the XP machine. It seems that the XP machine does not have enough, or claims to, have enough memory, as a resault the droppings. If I leave my client on for a little while longer and then attemp to connect to the internet with other applications, with some programs I got a much detialed error message. It says something about not having enough buffer space and I would need to restart the application?, but the only thing that I CAN do is restart the whole client. I've even tried to switch network cards ans cables with no avial.Quote:

Now that I have tempered with all these settings, I came accross another problem. If the XP machine is in the login screen, my client can go online fine. There is no droppings whatso ever. But as soon as I login to ANY accoubnt on the XP machine, the internet on the client machine drops. This time, there is no 2 hour window, just as soon as I long into the XP machine. Hope you guys can at lest answer this question because it has been eating at me for four months now, ever since I got my computer.
Have microsoft rewritten ICS or something? Because it would seem that all the provious versions work flawlessly. One of my friends have ME and no problems there, and my other one has 2000. Both are 2 machines with a cross-over cable.
