Stumped....XP Will not shut down

After initiating Shutdown or Restart, it speeds through Saving Settings, Running Shutdown Scripts, and so on very quickly. Then, once everything is done, after the dialog boxes are gone, the screen remains the nice shut down blue (not BSoD) for aprox. 3 or more minuts.

As for the device and system drivers, I keep everything very up to date. And I have no startup progs. I dont allow it. But on your suggestion, I do go through and recheck all drivers and devices. My NIC was behind one revision, so I did update that. I was out of date on that driver for 3 days...man I'm slackin. Forgot to put myself on thier driver update mailing list.

Got the latest BIOS update for my MB as well. Got my serial ports turned off, as well as the onboard Sound and game port.

Also. When the system hanges on shut down, I do notice my HD light is Solid the entire time. And just checked Event Viewer on your suggestion. Nothing there though.

Im gonna find I tell you, its a mission now:mad:

Maybe upgrading to the newest Linux will cure it....

If APM is enabled, try disabling it. Couldn't hoit.

I think you are thinking to hard on this one. Had the same problem a while back with a relative computer. Go into the bios and turn off all of the Wake on lan and Wake on ring and the like. Hope that helps

gotta say, that the amount of time you have spent trying other things, you could have uninstalled each hotfix and tested whether it was that by now....

Acctually I found it. And for this I should get the Dolt of the year award.

It was the Clear Page File at Shut Down that was causing the imence delay. After confus-ed brought up that possibility, I could have swarn I changed the value of the Reg string when I was in that spot reducing the Kill Hung Services one. I was mistaken. I went back just to dubble check, and noticed the value was still at 1.

Sorry I wasted everyones time with continuing this. It was my oversight all along.

This may/may not apply but it's worth a shot.

when the probem starts, shut down and insert the XP CD
make sure you can boot from cd and boot into the XP install.

When you see the "HIT F5 to load 3rd party drivers" hit F4

you will eventually be given a forced computer type install list - scroll up to the top and try using the ACPI installs that apply to your system (there might be 2) - if these cause the same problem, try the standard PC setup near the bottom.

Sometimes windows cannot identify or mis-identifiess the power management.
