Hey G Man, nobody is upset with you. We're just glad you posted the update. A lot of times, we never know if we actually helped anybody out or not. Plus, somebody else might learn something from your experience.
BTW, are you still having slow startlups with your new burner? If so, check to make sure everything shows up properly in your BIOS. Does everything work well once the system boots up?
Anyway, keep up the good work!
Is dma enabled for the burner? Is the burner dma capable?
I agree with Noo Noo, but just to be sure...
You do have the CD and HDD on different IDE channels right? Also, make sure that dma is turned on in the bios as well as in the OS.
Further, if you have both CD drives in - make sure the CD-R is set master and the other slave and/or try removing the old drive entirely.
Thanks a lot you guys... for giving me a big head, I've done every single thing you've suggested and still nothin.... DMA is enabled, it's on the secondary ide (well, I do have a ATA100 hard drive) its the only cdrom, everything works out in the bios.... I spose the next troubleshooting option is to puck around with things, like unplugging the burner and see if it loads up quick, try changing it to slave.... and so on.
I'll do that next time my dial-up drops out and keep you posted. But I really think it's just one of those things windows does when you change devices, buggering round with the drivers and all. If worst comes to worst I'll ghost back my hard drive and have to reinstall everything!
Most CDRoms and RW's cannot handle dma settings. The delay may well be the os trying to enable dma and finally giving up.
Yes, thats right, I have fixed this problem now. No, I havent really discovered what the problem was, I just ghosted my c partition back and all was well. Well that proves one thing at least; it wasnt hardware! Must've been some dodgy software I installed.
