Hello - First post!
First off I'm pretty certain he means an optical mouse rather than a trackball.
Also I had this problem with my comp was overheating. My comp would lock up for a few seconds and then unlock itself making it seem if only the mouse had froze.
I already know he has had problem with proc fan not working correctly.
The post above says its your processor fan. What is your current cpu temp right now? If its overheating this could easily be your problem.
If not, are you getting strange error messages? If so what are they?
You could always try changing the mouse pointer. This may
help you.
Try running scandisk, also system file checker. These again, are Win98 programs. I don't know if Win2k has equivalents.
Disable power management in the bios but keep it enabled in the OS.
Finally, was the proper setting for this device (whatever it was..usb, optical, trackball) enabled in the bios when you connected the mouse?

Orangeman, I am not sure why you think houllier* has 2k... this is posted in the 95/98 forum and he hasn't mentioned any other os.
houllier* - A couple more things to think about. I have an optical mouse that does NOT like certain patterned surfaces, I can drive it crazy putting it on a plastic covered map of the world!
The other, is that you have a new mouse with new drivers... it's possible it is making calls on the video drivers that the video drivers cannot handle... What video card do you have and when was the last time you updated the drivers?

It isn't new, it has only started happening recently, and while i do have a prob with the fan so it could be overheating, it has been like that since i got the mouse and has only recently started happening, so it could well be something else too.Quote:

- I could be either in the BIOS under System Settings. Press F8 when you restart and see if you find an area for system settings. Other than that your motherboard should have come with a disk that has a temperture utility.

- You disable background programs by pressing CNTL, AlT, Del once and together, and viewing the list of programs that come up. Highlight the program and the click 'end task' at the bottom. Do this to each program in line except Internet Explorer. This will eliminate background programs.
-The other way is to go to STart>Run and type in MSCONFIG. then uncheck everything except Win.ini and System.ini.

My proccessor is a Pentium 3, not sure of motherboard, it al came pre built, didn't get much info, and this was like 3 years ago.
Can't seem to find the temp either, tried pressing F8...Any other way?
Can't even play UT now :[

Okay,
Start>Run> type MSCONFIG. Then replace the checkmarks you took off in the last step. This should restore your previous functions. Under 'selective startup' you should have everything checked.
I'm sorry I was not able to help you with your mouse problem. Perhaps someone else can help.

never load mouse software, use WINDOWS defalts, If they do not work, throw or sell mouse. I have not seen any mouse software that will enhance any system. Don't believe me, try both........
WAKE UP! Did you not notice when you plugged that mouse in and booted that it workt???? Then you loaded drivers that came with it and now you have these probles. Go to control panel, look for mouse drivers, remove, restart, check it out.

but,how much ram do you have installed?
I had a freezing mouse problem years ago on a 98se system when I had a small amount of ram,I added more ram and the prob went away.
just a thought. :)
128 ram.
As i say, i will be buying new comp as soon as i get the money together.
ram is pretty cheap right now,128 or 256 might be worth adding,to see if that cures it.Quote:

you are on that border line with only 128.
128mb for 98 is plenty. I think that the drivers he loaded need to be removed.
