Windows Messenger lurking
Open the Windows\INF\SYSOC.INF folder with Notepad goto the line that starts with msmsgs=blah blah blah, edit out "hide", save and close the folder. Then goto ADD/Remove Windows Components in the Control Panel and then remove Messenger. This won't actually uninstall Messenger but will make it retire and "hide" within the software. You won't be able to use it again though until you add it back in.

This won't work in Ronin's situtation, as he has applied the updates to window messenger. Those steps only worked on the original messenger that installs with Windows XP pre sp1.
WIth the updated version, to keep the Windows Messenger PROGRAM from running, you just open the options and uncheck the box that loads it with windows.
However, this does not even address the issue that Ronin has, as he is trying to stop "msmsgs.exe" which is the Messenger PROCESS. This is done through Services in Computer Management.
Many people get the 2 confused- the messenger service and the Windows Messenger instant messenging program are not the same thing.
