My Ebay Rant

like iltu said, ebay is great if you're getting a good deal or willing to risk getting ripped off. i'm very very selective of the people i'll buy from. if they have 50 feedbacks, and 5 are negative, i probably won't buy from them.

i just ordered a set of HT speakers from ebay. the speakers were $700. i was kinda nervous because it was the most expensive thing i've bought off ebay. but the seller had like 5,000 feedbacks with only 8 or 9 negatives. i knew i was probably fairly safe. i went ahead and ordered and everything was great.

I got hosed on Ebay once. You're on your own, Ebay wasn't any help at all, they suggested leaving negative feedback. If you snail mail payment, you can claim mail fraud, but on a $10 item is it worth the effort?

The largest purchase I've made on Ebay is the aircraft in my Avatar, but I visited the seller in person and talked to him for over an hour before bidding. It's rarely possible to do that, but it was nice.

I have been involved in over 1000 transactions on Ebay, but mostly as a seller. The problem I see with Ebay is the feedback system. If I give negative feedback to a complete loser that never pays for something they bid on, I risk getting negative feedback in return from that person. That is how I got the only negative feedback I have. For that reason, I no longer give negative feedback to anyone no matter how deserving they may be.

I agree. That's a real problem. I had a similiar situation.

I was going to get a refund from someone when I purchased XP Professional instead of XP Home. About three weeks went by and no check or response to any of my three emails. Finally I asked PayPal and Ebay to write him to say that if I didn't get a response he would have his first negative feedback.

Lo & behold, guess what? I heard from the guy. He said he was moving and 'didn't have time' to write.

I got my money back minus a $10.00 'handling' fee.

I agree the feedback sucks. If I give somebody negative feedback I risk getting negative feedback even if I am totally innocent and a victim of this guy...! :confused: :flame:

I hear that. It's like leprocy. Rub up against a lousy seller/bidder and you catch the negative feedback.

man ebay is ruff either you geta deal or you get taken , like a few years ago in the summer of like 2001 or so i cant really remember ..when memory prices fell
on pc 100 /133 thier was a place on ebay selling ram i was laughiung at it .. i won an auction for like 11 bucks for a 128 stick ./. i paid for it never got it .. that person ended up witha slew of bad feedback ,then a non registered user .. etc ... my neighbor got like 3 of his sticks from them.. all were bad and leaded up to us not being freinds anny more as his wife flipped out at a comment , she had her hard drive formatted as the computer flipped out with the new {bad} ram installed wich i unsinstalled for her and really p ! zzed her off..
ive sold and bought on ebay but i tell you . you will meet the most ruthless ppl on ebay.. you can count on some one only sending the bid price or the shipping price then expect for you to send the item {laugh} i have a few items here that were never totally paid , as the check is still in the mail ...
always check as to what shipping price is ..
as i got ripped by a junior jerk on a deal that wouldnt leave me alone and kept harassing me in my email every day. emailing from where he worked every day ...he lives 3 hours away on a bad day ...i hacked a page and sent him the link .. java script suprize .. crashola link .. popups etc ..
gee havent heard from that scum bag since.. wonder what his boss thought when the printer fired up .....
most revenge i ever had on some smart @$$ punk from ebay ...

Wow! I guess that is one way to get rid of a jerk! I have had some minor frustrations with ebay, but on the whole, I have done well. But then again, I have done like 10 transactions in 4 years, all as a buyer. I am very careful what I bid on, and I put my maximum bid in the first time, and NEVER exceed it. I only bid what it is worth to ME.

I always pay right now, too.

Yeah not a lover of e-bay either....

Had mainly good transactions but had one which really stuck in the gut and took ages to sort out....

Bid on a model car of a muscle car, guy ships and it arrives damaged. External box is ok, but internal is not.

E-mails him back and he says it's not my problem contact the courier, so I repeat only the internal box is damaged, not the external therefore the problem occurred prior to transit. He then admits that ERTL have a habit of sending out dodgy models and that there is no comeback, he doesn't check items before they leave...

I replied with if you know that the models could be damaged and the box has been knocked, is it not worth your while to open the box and check the product prior to shipping?

He then got all a$$y and threatens me with neg feedback, and how he's gonna post a website about how its all my fault... so I e-mailed ebay and yep they said just post negative feedback.... so I keep on at this bloke and eventually he agrees to replace the item, took 4 months though of constant battling....

Put me off buying on e-bay for a long time.... have started purchasing again recently but only from shops, not individuals and only if they have 99% positive feedback.

I've only had one bad experience out of about 400 transactions. Bought a computer off a guy, paid with credit card, never heard back from him and couldn't get hold of him by email or phone.

Called the credit card company and they credited me back the money ($550) and went after him. There were about 50 other people all going after the same guy, it was pretty cool.

Well about a month after I cancelled thru my credit card company, I received a computer in the mail from the guy. The motherboard was fried, the video card was fried, the modem worked, the sound card worked and the case and power supply were good. So I ended up getting about 60 dollars worth of stuff for my aggravation and the guy ended up getting arrested.

Haven't had a problem in the 3 years since then tho.

Only 1 problem myself with a seller who sent me a duff video card. After a week of no movement I left negative feedback, and then got some back from him. Great!
So I signed up from work as a new user, I signed up from a friends as a new user and bid on his next two items as these new users. I won both auctions and just left negative feedback without ever contacting him. Nasty comments too, and lies. Looking back it was a bit stupid of me but it felt great at the time!

I simply ask before bidding if I can collect the item and what their location is. If I don't get a positive reply, I don't bid.
