I agree, ATI drivers can be a pain, too.
When I upgrade a PC with new hardware, new OS, but same hard drive (ghosted to a new drive), I do what you do and it takes a long time.
This needs to be done for many of business customer who don't want to save all data and reinstall EVERYthing.

What do you mean?
OS symtoms which may point to bad keys?
Norton WinDoctor is just that, part of the housecleaning, not a runaway app.
And, it runs off the CD, not installed.
System Mechanic and SystemSuite all have the same utilities which I use as well.
Getting back to what Ringo originally asked, he was wondering what you use to "sort registry errors" as it applied to WinDoctor.
To do what WinDoctor does manually would take much too long.
This is why I questioned your "by hand" comment.

I never have.

I don't use it. I have never needed to. It doesnt take very long to sort them out yourself.

OS symptons such as autoplay not working, or killing hijackers, or messed up file associations, startup stuff you don't want, tons of little things that take a few seconds to clear.

But RegClean's Registry Cleaner is exactly what WinDoctor does!!
I just downloaded it and will give it a go since it has many other useful tools.

That one goes in my toolbox as well.
These are the "powertoys" (sic) which help us day in and day out to cut a little time off our jobs.
I gather we can agree on that? ;)

So the last sentance says it all !! (that is sarcastic !), but I dunno what it thinks is wrong either, perhaps if it actually "said" - things might be clearer ! (& that's sarcastic too !)

But how the hell is the master file table (MFT) a bitmap or have 'bitmap attriibute(s)'!?!?! ... now see what I mean about Norton disk doctor .... ?

The only answer to get a completely trouble free beast is to set it up yourself with 'known' applications (that behave) & take it from there ... recovering somebody else's 'mess' is (as appears here) often just so many shots in the dark ;)

What 'symptoms' other than the Norton 'errors' do we have, any ?

Seems my post has turned into a usual windrivers argument. Someone should open a sarcasm forum and let confus-ed be moderator :D. Never mind...good reading. As far as setting it up myself goes, that's what I've done. The thing's a home build and the software is selected for what I need for Uni and play.

I was as confused as you when I saw bitmap in relation to MFT, but then I don't believe everything that appears on the screen. As regards other symptoms I can't think of anything other than the very rare 0x000000A stop error. Not very concerned about that though at the moment.

This is a VIA chipset ? ... so try the latest Hyperions ... I had a 'rash' of 'unexplained' stop errors, all of which seem to have vanished after new hyperions were installed ...

But this install 'is kind of fixed'- now ? So we can consider it 'fixed' ??? or not ?

Yeah it's a VIA chipset. Already done an update for that, in fact it's one of the first things you suggested in this post. I would say my PC was pretty much sorted for the moment tho...other than the strange disk doctor error (I'll ignore that though unless someone thinks of an explanation). I'll be back quick enough if there's more probs. Cheers guys

Did I ? There you go ! .... Confus-ed again ! ;) ... my point was that there's been a set released(very quickly after some others) which fixed up a load of 'strange' occurances, usually I only update Hyperions when 'broke', but in this case I've gone to the trouble of re-updating all machines with 4.48 to 4.49...

Anyway if its going 'well enough' ... I'll consider it 'case closed' ... :)

Not to start another argument, but on the subject of Registry Cleaning, I like to use "RegSeeker" It is Freeware, small enough to fit on a disk, and does not require installation. Works great at finding those old busted entries, but not a troubleshooting tools by any means. I especially find it useful when upgrading old 9x boxes to 2k or XP when the User insists we cannot re-install certain apps. Not as good a a clean load, but the next best thing.
