I love them 'minimum' specs quoted :eek2: ... 'recommended' is less than adequate but working, 'minimum' hardly even practical, unless you like to make a cup of tea between things !

Putting 98 on a machine built in the last 6-12 months is definitely difficult, and probably shouldn't be done. But I have 3 laptops - a 486 running 95, plays the dos games great for the kids, a p166 and a p2 300 - both running 98 great for doing little bits. Windows update for 98 and self help ( read knowledgebase ) is what is being extended and only then if M$ deems it serious enough to warrant them spending the time to create an update or hotfix for an issue.

BTW, every single machine I've upgraded from Win98 to Win2000 has "suffered" from faster boots/OS loads and stability - even the Pentium I/II's.

I'm always surprised by the number of people who love W98. Is it the memory leaks, the system resources bottleneck, problems with file corruption, or the frequent crashes that make it so beloved? Just don't get it.

My son was peeved when I upgraded from Win98 to Win2000 and then to WinXP, as his favourite (Slave Zero) no longer worked.

I haven't seen ANY of those problems. Now when the CPU cooling fan gets gummed up or burned out, that can cause all kinds of screwy problems...but again, you can't blame that on the version of Win98...Win2K or XP would do that same thing.

I personally am not against upgrading but the customer (remember him?) is happy with his present setup. Forcing him to upgrade will make him resentful and less likely to do business with you in the future. And remember, he is the one who holds the purse strings.

Now, with the price of memory, there really is no excuse for not having 128 or 256MB of RAM in any machine. But making them upgrade to PII's or PIII's or higher with maxed-out video cards, etc. is unrealistic...and unnecesary.

Its a pain in the bum, I agree but once its 'right' its good ... so if you have it, then odds are its 'good', so you probably wouldn't have want of change ;) - not broken etc..

The main thing is memory especially for xp, lappies in particular don't have enough & more for old kit is dumb, same thing to some extent with pcs. Many folks will just hang fire until they upgrade kit, to them the o/s is a piece of the computer!
