You'll see there that there are two 'ways' of doing it ... online or more traditionally with a download and a 'flash writing' utility ... confirm you've done one or the other please & your motherboard now has its latest bios :)

Be aware that 'mis-flashing' might damage your motherboard ... if you aren't sure ASK !

Yeah I have a program that downloads the BIOS and then updates it's automatically. Or at least is says that my BIOS version is the 1008, which is the latest.

What did you do about your 'suspect' services ? ... I'm still of the opinion we might have more than we 'need' ...

Go get yourself HijackThis (its really a tool for removing malware-viruses,trojans & worms) ... but its pretty hard to get a list of running services out of xp Home, but this'll give you a log that you can cut & paste here, which'll hopefully tell us what I want to see :) (& we get the 'bonus' of being able to say we don't have any 'net nasties' to blame for all this.. ;))

I will second Poseidon's question about the PWS. I was having problems playing any games a while back. The computer ran fine until I tried to run a 3D game, then it would crash or reboot. I got a new PWS and the problem went away.

I have 350W silent PWS.

Another longshot, but happened to me twice - check your video card and motherboard for leaking or blown capacitors (the little tube lookin things). I had a vid card that worked fine until you ran 3d. Took it out and noticed the capacitors were leaking ooze and probably couldn't handle the extra juice they use for 3d.

In my experience, it's quite tricky tracking down a crash in 3D games because they are the most brutal to a system. Here are some things I've read or experienced:

1. Historically, NVIDIA, VIA and CREATIVE don't play nice...make sure you have the latest drivers.

2. Power supply can be a sneaky. Even though you may have a highly rated PS unit, as far as watts, it may not be able to handle the load you're putting on it or it's on it's way to PS heaven.

3. Memory (RAM) can be an evil. I had bad stick of RAM, but it would only crash in Dark Age of Camelot. I swore it was the game, but it turned out it was actually RAM. I used memtest86 to isolate the bad RAM. www.memtest86.com

Specifically for sound.

Cthelper -CTHELPER is a background task that is a plug-in manager for Creative drivers. It first appeared with Creative’s SoundBlaster Live and Audigy soundcards - turn the service off.

MsPMSPSv -Microsoft’s WMDM PMSP Service, aka Windows Media Device Manager Pre-Message Security Protocol Service -highly unlikely you want it turn it off.

Have you tried moving the Creative card to another PCI slot?

A more drastic approach would be to remove all ISA/PCI cards except for video and sound and see what happens.

Right then I shan't continue with your log then ... you do have lots of 'stuff' installed that won't be helping ... a nice clean shinny install is always good, though this time I suggest you hold off ever installing any of the creative 'bloatware' at all ;)
If you manage that sucessfully I think everything should be 'funky' :)

Just read through this thread and one thing that "could" cause this is an overheating processor on the motherboard or video card. Once you start the game you're sure working them both harder than normal, a few minutes with poor heat control and crash! OK so it's a long shot, but a few minutes checking is better than a few hours reloading to no avail if it is the cause.

Anyway, report back if you do get a result. It would be good to know if you fix it and how.

I had a similar problem with a Creative sound card under WindowsXp
i tried the latest drivers with no luck then i uninstalled and reinstalled the sound card useing the Windows provided driver and the problem went away Good Luck!

Do not use the updated driver for Creative sound on windows update.
