Win98se Shut-Down Problem

When the 'children' have finnished 'fratching'

Orange you are supposed to go here & get or read win98hcl.txt to see whether your hardware is compatible ... for future reference;) - anything not on the list wants removing while you set up everything else (its not 'exhaustive' but shows what 'ought' to be ok).

Turning now to your errant items ...

Wave Device for Voice modem is the part for a speakerphone modem ... its not unusual for this to be 'orphaned' .. you probably have a working driver for the modem, but not all its features - most likely this is 'good'? as a modem but you have this 'strange' bit left, it won't harm ... confirm for me the modem works ! ;)

Creative Soundblaster PCI 128 - I pressume thats what you have but it shouldn't show as just that in sound, video & games controllers, there should also be a game port or midi port showing up ... as you suspect :)... (in fact I think in 98 there maybe ought to be another 'bit too?)

Have we now been to windows update? if not do !

Thanks Confused,

Going to Windows Update did take care of the error message. Now I just have the original shut down problem to deal with. BTW, there Was a shut-down download on Win update. But it did no good.

I'm going to go into the machine tomorrow. Maybe I jostled something inside.

Right now I'm going to get some sleep.

I think your 'not restart' issue is probably either chipset tied, you won't get that from windows update, or acpi tied - its fairly easy in win 9x to switch, unlike xp ...

So get any chipset patches &/or that failing to get it tell me what m/b & I shall 'speculate' (its notorioiusly difficult to say for sure) whether acpi is best on or off , this'll probably reveal any apm issues as well .. when you wake up! :D

Should ASPI be turned on or off? So far power management is turn off.

Also, it boots fine from Safe Mode...

Aspi is a translation layer for cd writing. :p

ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) should be ON (probably! :D )
APM wants to be off (that's advanced power management)

Got the chipset drivers applied?

Right so I'm confus-ed again ! :D

Just shutdown ? OR no restart &/or shutdown (same in safe & 'normal' ?), & what does it make of either hibernate or sleep ? (By the looks the machine can't do 'power on from keyboard' {I don't think it has the circuitry-'cheapo' boards often don't} so as far as sleep/hibernate goes you'll have to use 's1' as the sleep state, for now anyway use it - you can try 's3' but I think it'll 'get stuck'...)

APM settings in bios want to be 'user defined' with each item not allowed in standby etc. or OFF ;)

& do we have the latest greatest bios for this board ?

(I want to exhaust ALL possibilities before we start messing about turning acpi on/off ... I think this ought to work with it on - but like I said ;)..)

Just shutdown ? It won't restart. It will shut down; also It WILL restart in SAFE MODE>

OR no restart &/or shutdown (same in safe & 'normal' ?), & what does it make of either hibernate or sleep ? When I click Standby, it appears to shut off, but instead if I move the mouse it comes back to life.

Okay line one tells me its some program could be stopping it - try shuting stuff off in task manager & see if there's a difference

Line two sounds just 'normal' for a board that can't really do sleep & has s1 set in bios, some boards can't do it at all.

HI Confused,

Well I shut down line one and still no joy. I went online and consulted the 'Windows Shutdown Troubleshooter.' Actually there are several troubleshooters. I'm surprised at how many troubleshooters there are.

Anyway, I went through their list of things. One thing said to 'disable escd updates' located in the System Files of Device Manager. -No Joy.

I then went back into Device Manager and went into Plug and Play Bios and disabled IRQ steering. Now it would restart, but only in Safe Mode. It wouldn't get back to Normal Mode.

I reinstated IRQ steering --- and lo 'n behold, JOY..

It restated.

Well given what you've told me about how you fixed it, I'm none the wiser ! :D - you seemed to have done 'nothing' ... however it fixed it so fair play ! :thumbs:

Well guess what, I'm none the wiser either. What I told you in my earlier post was incorrect. It had nothing to do with disabling IRQ steering or escd updates in System Properties of Device Manager. I know because I just now tried backtracking the steps.

It had to do with a setting in my bios that said "allocate irq to vga monitor."

I remember switching this because I was getting some flicker in my monitor when I went online. Now I just reverse the setting in my bios and it restarted fine.

- And to solve the flicker problem I raised the refreshed rate.

Go figure. It must have been a setting in my video card. Also, I just upgraded the drivers in my agp card - an Nvidia GeForce Mx400 AGP2 card.

That explanation makes much more sense :thumbs:

In furtherance of the educate Orange campaign :D ... IRQ ALWAYS wants setting for VGA ;) preferably not shared ! - its one of those legacy things, but 99% of systems want it on, otherwise windows has a lot of trouble when it needs to do things like switching displays.
