Err I can find lots & lots of Linux messages about this particular file & driver (no windows ones though !).. all of them effectively saying faulty '.inf' associated with it, they are saying to not install 'bcmwl5.inf' but to use 'bcmwl5a.inf' to install it instead ..

Are those files present in the download ? you might try manually installing maybe the 'other' .inf ?

The files that I'd download from ASUS web for WL100G driver are (after unzip):
bcm43xx.cat
bcmwl5.inf
bcmwl5.sys

These files are the same in original CD Driver.

I don't know what another '.inf' file can i install?

How are you installing the infs? Through update driver ? Or right click install on the inf file?

Have you tried the BIOS settings that I mentioned earlier.

As I mentioned. I had EXACTLY the same problem and those setting made it work fine.

No need to be messing about in safe mode, or logging in as donald duck, just change the bios settings.

I tried the BIOS setting:
The Parallel port mode to Bi-directional
Enable 32 bit I/O for the HDD
Enable the USB Host Controller

And nothing. Windows hungs when I plug the PCMCIA.

Ah, maybe we are looking at the wrong thing here. What does device manager have to say about your cardbus slot? (where you plug in the pcmcia card).

I think that cardbus slot is fine, i have installed another pcmcia (3COM Ethernet) and it was fine.

same problem here compaq evo n1020V notebook with an Texax Instrument 4410 adapter..my computer freezes everytime i put my pmcia cad in. This is an WPC54G Linksys, update everything nothing helped...dont know what to do anymore

reboot youre system, and use the default drivers that were deliverd by youre pmcia card.

it works great by me!!!

I also have an evo n1020v, have just acquired a belkin 54G for Wlan and have experienced the same freezing issue each time I was trying to install the drivers of the card (probably due to TI 4410 as indicated earlier). I have made sure all the latest WINDOWS XP patches and updates were installed. I have tried many solutions without success. I finally got the message of this forum. I installed the XP enhancements on HP website ( I suppose it was the version 3.0 H. I have also changed my BIOS settings ( I put the Parallel port mode to Bi-directional, Enable 32 bit I/O for the HDD, Enable the USB Host Controller).... But I still get the same problem than before. I still can't use the card and everything freezes when I try to use it.

Would ANYBODDY know about what is done behind the scene that allow some ones to use their Wlan card thanks to the changes that are mentionned? What else should be done to finally be able to use that card?

COMPAQ EVO N1020v SOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good morning everybody!

I believe that I have found the solution to the problem regarding the PCMCIA card freeze on Compaq evo.

My Story

After a year or so of using dial up connection I decided the time had come to switch to broadband, a switch that many of my friends had made over the previous months.

I thought it best to purchase a router to share the connection between my pc and laptop, so I purchased the Belkin ADSL Router with Built in Modem and a Belkin 54g WLAN card. I was able to install my PCMCIA card with no problems HOWEVER after having to format my laptop the problem started.

Each time that I tried to install my WLAN card it freezed at the copying files part. I thought that the problem may be due to belkin, not the case though as the card worked perfectly on my friend's laptop, I thought "crap i can't even get a refund!!!" I even updated all the windows patches and drives but no success.

I was dumbfounded, at the point of snapping my PCMCIA card, (I'm sure that feeling is mutual amongst you guys).

At 2am Yesterday, I went on another forum where many people were having the same problems, there was a solution apparently. To eradicate this problem you had to boot from the compaq recovery CD's! I thought oh no!!!!! And even then some people were not able to install their wireless card.

2.45am I find the solution

Right I think I've milked it enough, here's what I did and it worked. Go to

and go to the sub-section titled Operating System - Enhancements and QFEs

Download all of the available downloads, the first one being ATI U1.....etc

This solved the problem for me, I did not change my bios settings or anything else, I just downloaded and installed all of the available downloads and when I attempted to install my belkin 54g from the installation CD it worked, it did not freeze and it did it NOT hang when booting my laptop again.

NOTE: I had already installed all windows updates before hand, I don't know if this will make a difference or not.

Hope this solves your problem. If it does then please let the word out as I've been on many a forum and so many people have this problem.

Just wanted to send a million thanks, I gave up on my Proxim A/B/G card 2 weeks ago until today and the fix you posted worked great on my Evo N1020v running XP Pro.
I'm not sure which of the updates worked, but I downloaded all the updates under Operating System - Enhancements and QFEs and now my proxim works with no lockup.
