Because probably the last person that had the ip you are now using was using it to tranfer files and that person disconnected...but the person who the files were coming from or to are still trying to get connected to a computer that is no longer there.Quote:

Internet explorer is like the swiss cheese of computing, all holes ! (in this case security holes & 'unexpected' consequences ) ...
Very often when you visit sites they pop up little boxes saying 'install this, install that ..y/n .. dire consequences will happen if you don't, blah, blah, blah ..' or worse still you don't get any little box at all & the damn thing just installs it anyway regardless of whether you wanted it, or agreed to it, or most importantly understood the consequences of installing all this 'stuff' whose sole purpose is to glean info from your system .. Programs do this too, like games & particularly 'freebies', by installing things to track your downloads etc to get marketing info (why do you think its free ?), but some surprisingly 'I thought I could trust that' software does it too ;) ..
So what to do ? , what to do ...
You need to go get yourself something like Spybot Search & destroy (the spybot site is 'down' yet again ! :rolleyes: - its such a 'good' product all the hackers in the world seem to attack it every day ! & cause DoS {denial of service} issues for them, on the link I gave which is a cached copy @ cnet, there's a link to the authors home page - get the latest version latter/as soon as ! ;)) or get yourself Adaware by Lavasoft (A similar product - both are free or have a free version for home use). You might also check out HijackThis - the 'daddy' of malware removers ( but this is 'expert' for sure ! ;)) ...
One or other or all three will probably indicate you have more malware than you ever considered, all this may be 'phoning home' lots of stuff you never wanted, or worse still exposing your system to other 'nasties' as as far as your firewall & av software are concerned these are all 'ok' as you installed them (as I explained earlier you might have, but not because you 'meant to' ..).. all three products can detect malware & to some extent block future 'nasties' by using the 'innoculate' feature, which installs a block on known nasties being able to be installed in the future ..
None of this is helped by the fact that different AV vendors define some stuff differenetly from others (that's supposed to get it all isn't it ? Well no it isn't, but when you read all their blurb you come away with the impression it will !), so theres 'overlap' & confus-ed-ness over what products should stop what.
Generally for any machine connected to the net especially with an allways on connection (like cable say), you NEED AV software, a firewall & some anti-malware product ..

Many thanks to all that replied to my posting. especially confus-ed. I downloaded your recomendations and found a total of 267 items of malware. I didn't even know these existed. I now have an up and running reasonably healthy PC again thanks to this site.
