For a start you want to get rid of
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://mysearchnow.com/searchbar.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://mysearchnow.com/searchbar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyServer = 137.205.192.27:3128
and find out what
C:\PROGRA~1\AUTOUP~1\AUTOUP~1.EXE
is
-
Ok, I've got rid of those three, plus the Auto Update process (I don't know what it was so I've put it in the recycle bin for now). I'm afraid this hasn't improved DVD performance.
-
That's a long log .. Noo's pretty good with these off the top of her head ;) (better than me anyway :)) - but both she & I may need to keep googling, so more replies may keep coming .. for now I have: -
evntsvc.exe - 'spurious' not malware -'explain' here (I'd get shut of it with Hijackthis not via msconfig, that turns it off rather than gets rid of)
& while I remember to say - TIP for HijackThis - it of course keeps a record of what you remove & lets you put the keys back !
So methinks time for another 'experiment' while I google ..
Why not try getting rid of 'everything' - unplug from the net first ! (you might temporarily loose some functionality) - but it'll let you see if DVD playings gonna improve at least - then just put it all back after, while I & Noo look for 'nasties' for you .. (make sure you know how to restore any keys obviously before you do ;))
-
Hmm, I just did as you said - cleaned out everything that came up from the HijackThis scan, rebooted, tried DVD and it works just as badly. I've restored all except those original three baddies. Any more ideas?
-
Oooh ! he says now stumped !.. (btw you may still have some spyware 'lurking' I can't really speak for Noo, but I just had a quick scan down it all, so at least be aware for now & we'll concentrate on the DVD issue & just say 'not malware' for now)..
Tried sfc at any point ? (that's sytem file checker - M$ 'destructions' btw they fixed it for xp - it didn't work 'good' in 98 always)
A lot of stuff has been installed on this sytem over the eons - we touched on this briefly earlier - but dare I mention clean install ?!? (man that's defeatist - but I think I'm stuck ! Leave the thread open a while before you decide to do this, others might show up with some inspired ideas yet ;))
Troubleshooting this would be easier from a clean install - but if I were fixing this 'hands on' I guess I could just copy the drive, try it & copy back if I had to - you mayn't have that luxury or capacity ?
-
I'll try the sfc thing, but I have to disappear now so it's probably a good thing that you have no more substantive ideas for the minute.
There may be a way I can wangle the capacity for a clean install. I'll look into it.
Many thanks for your time though. Any light-bulb revelations are welcome! YP.

The sfc didn't turn up anything I'm afraid.
A friend has a portable hard-drive that I can use so in the next fortnight I will bite the bullet and [gulp] clean install everything. I will get back then to let you know, perhaps using my newly acquired knowledge of 'bumping'. ;)

The DVDs on my Satellite (same ay YL's but I have 256 MB RAM) get slow with video and sound as well. What I've noticed first is 100% cpu use as soon as I start playing and slow-downs in the first couple of minutes. A friend-of-a-friend with the same Tosh but win2k instead of XP never complained AFAIK.
guess it might be the codecs anyway
-
Nine, welcome to windrivers... what process is using all that cpu?
-
Built in task manager tells me it's powerdvd.exe (wmplayer, or divix player etc - whatever I'm using) with 80% at the lowest to 90-something. Taskmgr.exe goes next rarely reaching more than 10%.
When I play an mpg-1, avi or asf my players consume less than 20-25%
-
Have you been to windows updates lately? Have you got the latest patches for powerdvd?
-
With so many Toshiba Users(including a friend of mine) who are experiencing problems with their DVD/Combo drives, its surprising Toshiba havent done anything about it and they do provide 3 year international warranty.
-
I wimped out at the last minute and couldn't bring myself to wipe the hard-drive; my Coen-bros collection will have to stay at home. :(
This likely has nothing to do with the problem but just in case I thought I'd tell you. The laptop sometimes crashes, giving me 60 seconds to close work, with this message: "Shutdown initiated by NT AUTHORITY SYSTEM the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly"
Any ideas?
-
Yup you have msblast or a variant thereof.
This means you have not been doing your windows updats. Anti virus updates cannot prevent this happening. removal instructions here

I misguidedly or otherwise download and run Windows updates whenever it tells me to, and I went to the update website and it says there's nothing missing. I went through all the steps anyway, installing the patch, rebooting in safe mode, then ran the "f-lovsan tool" but it said there was no infection on my system, so it didn't seem to do anything. But maybe it did, without telling me.
Does anything else that springs to mind that causes these RPC problems? I'm sure this seems a little off-topic given the original problem about the DVD drive but my thinking is that whatever causes these symptoms may also be affecting the DVD drive. If this is unlikely then just say! :)
