I've had this problem before and with Office Update. One partial solution is to obtain as many updates as possible from the Microsoft download page rather than through Windows Update. Also, try this .vbs file (xp_winupd_netpolicy.vbs) from http://www.dougknox.com. or run gpedit.msc and try resetting permissions manually. Good luck.
I'm a long-time reader of WinDriver forums, found a lot of good help and advice here. :) I also had a terrible time trying to get the latest updates. I tried everything suggested here, did many searches around the internet and the updates still failed to install. Then I remembered ZoneAlarm.... I'd installed the free version awhile back, but I'd shut it down a week or so ago so it wasn't running in the taskbar area as usual....however, it WAS still running in the XP services/processes list. So, I activated it, went back to Win Updates, clicked the "allow" box from ZA when it popped up, and the updates FINALLY installed properly! Anyway, just thought I'd throw that in as a possibility....
Thanks for the tip Chiquita and glad you quit lurking!
Welcome to Windrivers Cry - what windows are you running? Do you have a firewall, antivirus or similar? have you read through this?
