EUREKA! Jlindy is absolutely right! I kept pressure on the USB memory key and the laptop finally recognized it and it worked fine as long as I kept pressure on it. Solution: I slowly filed the plastic casing around the metal plug with a nail file until I reduced it by about 1 mm. Now the USB key works like a charm.
Thanks to all for the help. It might be useful spreading this workaround to all the unhappy Lexar users.

1 other thing that I noticed was that the default drive leter for my JumpDrive was the same as for my network drive. It would not show up. I changed the drive leter for the JumpDrive and all is well.
