First off, thanks for your continuous help. How do I uninstall the driver. Do I go to device hardware and remove it? Also where do I go to get what I need for the driver?
I need to know the soundcard make and model or if it is onboard sound, the motherboard make and model
If you have a branded machine eg compaq, dell, then the full model of the computer instead.
In 98 you check add/remove programs for any software related to your sound card... then go to device manager and delete the items under sounds and multimedia. This is best done in safe mode.
here it is

Aah you have a compaq!
What model compaq? Compaq make their own drivers... often they tweak their versions for their machines and the reference drivers do not work.
John please stick to one thread
I have merged your other two into this one.
Compaq Presario 5BW130 (5000) series
here are all the drivers and updates for your compaq
Have you done the headphone test yet?
