Setup problem?

Can you ping the router with a cabled in machine ?

& if the wireless is not connecting how did this happen ?

Or have you given it one manually ? in which case you want dhcp off in the router -as thats what it does - give out ips.

Sorry I am so confusing but trust me it is because I am so confused.
With the machine directly physically connected to the router with the belkin adapter I am not able to ping the router although the indicator lite is on on the router.

With the machine connected to the wireless everything works normally. I can connect to the network and ping everything.

between the two IPconfig dumps above all I did was shut down and disconnect the Belkin the connect the D-link and boot up.

Make sure that your cable is good. You will get link lights on some routers even if one pair is connection.

Also make sure that your are not using a grossover cable by mistake.

You stated that you are on a network. Try the cable from another machine.

Change the port the cable is connected to on the router.

Make sure you are not connected to an uplink port.

Thanks for all of those suggestions I have tried each of them. The laptop has been on several different networks and in several different equipment configurations. In each the symptoms were the same the only divergence was with the wireless setup. I am of the belief that this is some wierd setup problem. I may be wrong but can't think of anything else that is common. I am confused by the fact that the same thing was manifested on a linux setup but think I may be able to attribute that to a bad pcmcia card. I want to try the linux with the belkin adapter to verify that and will soon as I get the linux disk. That would at least define the problem as a windows problem.

Not using MAC blocking on the router are you ?

I normally do have that on but for these tests it was turned off. Also if that was the interference I would not be able to connect doing the wireless. The symptoms on tis are really out of the normal and I do appreciate every thought.

I was able to ping the server but when I tried to ping www.msn.com it timed out. Interestingly it did identify the IP number for the site. Does this provide any additional actionable information?

www.msn.com is configured to drop icmp packets.

try to ping google,

or another small site on the internet.

Better yet ping the actual IP of somewhere that definately does support the appropriate packet return as you said Google does :thumbs: , but if we have dns issues that might confuse matters & personally I always try & use an IP & not a 'friendly' name - so one of googles many IPs is 66.102.11.99 ;)

Can I have confirmation that the above info of Robert's is for this hardwired connection ? (I've managed to get all the way through this thinking the problem was with the wireless bit ! :D - a little appropriate labelling will lessen any more potential confus-ion methinks :))

Thanks confus-ed yes the hard wired is the problem and I will shortly try the ping to the address you specified.

New data point and possibly some progress. I was able to ping google, yahoo and several others. I actually had connectivity and got yahoo home page up and google search page but when I dried to go to other pages it seemed to time out. The pings seemed to me to be long TTl in the mid 200s. Any thoughts at this point?

Does this show anyone more knowledgable than I something?

After all this time and with a lead provided by the Belkin folks I finall understood how you can adjust the speed of the internet connection. Having that lead I experimented a bit and reduced the connection speed and it worked like a charm. Thanks for all the help before and hope this helps someone else.
