For one thing its not that easy, if you use the internet with some sense, to get a virus in the first place, my main source, is my moms floppies that she brings from work. AVG has in the past missed a virus that NAV caught, so I was pretty dissapointed and its horrible at cleaning the virus, it just says run AVG to clean it, they really want you to spring for the PRO version. At least NAV isnt leading you on and keeping updates from you!
TechZ~ Do you set the AVG real time protection (resident shield) to use Heuristic Analysis?
Alotta times this will make it more effective.
I'm sure it'll still miss the occasional virus, but same with McAffee or Norton etc.
Used AVG6 for a while and thought it was really cool, only problem I had was the update manager not working, but some clever chap here got me sorted....
I have been using AVG7 for some weeks and like the layout and I still have not been hit with a virus. Combined with spybot and Zone Alarms, my home pc has never had an issue, nor have any of my friends who have installed.
Wouldn't stick Norton on my personal equipment for a million bucks, ok maybe I would if someone wants to test me! :thumbs2:
I started with NAV, and since its never let me down, yet, I'm gonna stick with it.
And Heuristics is always on for me craigm.
switched to avg 7 and it found two viruses avg 6 didnt see :/ and I update avg every day. Ohwell I have not had a problem with avg 7
Have you guys tried Panda?
Seems to do an excellent job without the price and "bloatware" issues.
Have had problems with Norton recently
Am currently testing Panda 2005 - machine must be clean for a successful install. Seems once installed it runs as well as 2004 and picks up all the trojans as well
I've been using AVG 7.0, the paid version since 4/04 and I've had zero problems with it. Compared to NAV 2004 that crashed twice and would only work with a complete re-install... two years of definitions vs. one year on NAV 2004 and it was only $33.Quote:

Yes & no he said confus-edly :D .. nearly but not quite, you get a better schedule manager & newer pattern updates & you can get online help - but as far as I can tell no other 'real' differences, so methinks for most not worth paying for ! :eek2: .. I'd say its only 'worth' the money when you want to protect something more than 1 pc, then since we are paying I might be recommending other products anyway ;)Quote:

gotta say this, anyone still using NAV either has a hell of a lot of spare time, or absolutely no critical data.
in the last month, I have had 5 PC's in my workshop. ALL with NAV installed and a full system scan found "ZERO" virii on the PC. A quick hook up to the broadband and a visit to PANDA's online scanner was a little more eyeopening. One of the machines had 45 infections one was MSBLAST!!
My current choice is EZARMOR 2005 with PEST PATROL v5. I also do a monthly visit to PANDA - Nothing on the pc in over 2 years now.
I used to swear by NAV - Not anymore, and neither do the 5 customers that came to the workshop!!
Another thing I have done is switched over to Firefox - Yeah Baby!!
I'll relate a story, I dunno if I've mentioned this before... but I had this computer come in that was obviously laden with all sorts of viral goodness. I detached the hard drive and attached it to my own tech machine and ran AVG (scanning all files and it was AVG 6 at the time) It for something like 100 files infected with a myriad of viruses. I also ran an updated NAV2004 which also found infected files again ranging in different types. I then reinstalled the drive in the computer and ran the dumb fprot garbage which now was able to load properly. It found a few more. I ran Panda's online one, found 5 more. Ran Trend Online, found 4 more. Ran Bitdefender, found 1 more. I couldn't believe it. I removed the crappy F-Prot poop and tried to install AVG and it wouldn't go. I ended up running a "dos based" program from kaspersky I think that found 1 more. Then AVG installed fine and the customer has been fine ever since. There were viruses I've never heard of and even some old school klez, magistr and hybris. How the heck he got all that crap is beyond me as he says he just "uses it for email". Whatever buddy... So that just proved to me how useless these virus scanners are.\
PS Specific numbers of viruses I'm not sure on, but you get the idea....
The thing with AV software is always the fact that one of them is going to miss something, where another one will find it. I was a big fan of Norton, but in my opinion, ever since 2003, their software is becoming crap. Problems with installing, errors after installing etc, however, the corporate version is sweet. Efficient and non-taxing. Does a very good job at quarantine and or removal. Just my $0.02
That reminded me one customer's computer what came in with OS completely consisted ... of viruses... :D slow as hell... consider this - on his 30GB harddrive AVG 6 found ... no kidding... more than 35000 (!) infected files plus about 1500 of spyware stuffs were found by AdAware... Just for laughs, it took about 1,5 hours just to remove/heal of those infected files after tests finished... And the most funniest thing was - he had NAV installed and stayed resident (but guess what - never been updated!)...
As it seems to me, most of customers never uses their NAV even with 90 days subscriptions, installed by PC manufacturer... and NAV without updated virus database cannot catch even relatively old viruses...
OK, so not much faith in NAV anymore.
THe once incident on my lappy I remember is AVG not picking up a virus in a zip file, moved the fiel (unknowingly) to the desktop and NAV2K3 found it immediately.
What I mean to say is no AV is perfect so what do we do? Keep 3-5 of them running at all times? No, i Guess no, Online scan are a healthy option for a once a month/week kind of thing, and well gotta trust an AV, there are no best ones, everyones got their own opinion.

For years now i have been using AntiVir and let me tell you: its perfect.
Does not mess up the system like norton,
its better than norton at detecting and eliminating virus.
