This is a tricky question ! -at the moment my general 'upgrade advice' is 'don't -wait' ;) - but if thats not 'practical' I might be mooching on ebay for some 'stop gap' - whatever you do do will be a compromise one way or another ! - if you want 'new' then the latest 'semperons' (the ones with 512k of l2 cache) on a socket a board are probably 'best bang for ecconomy buck' just right now ..

I've actually decided on the XP 2700 solution. No issues there and it's $50 cheaper.

You could always get a socket 939 A64 with a board that supports dual channel, that way you dont completely starve the cpu. PC2100 in dual channel gives a 4.2GBPS theoretical bandwidth

Yeah he could & blow his budget right out of the window :p - the board for that is gonna cost almost as much as some low end xp/semperon & socket A board - never mind for a 'real' 64 bit chip as well ! :)..

(rough sums on this would be $100 for 'bottom' socket A & board vs $200 for 'bottom' socket 939 & chip - not my call, but if you have to wait until next month to be able to manage that, I'd say it was well worth the wait ! :thumbs: )

(by way of 'explain' AMD 64 comes in two flavours, 'nearly 64' which lives on socket 754 & 'nearer 64' {still can't 'really' say 64 bit as the feeds eg. the pci bus aren't !} which comes on socket 939 boards ).

my only question is will an AGP 4X work in an 8X board ?

ATI 7500 AIW AGP 2X/4X @ 1.5/3.3 Volts, AGP 8X = 1.5 V this should work

Opinions on VIA chipsets, nForce ? (not a big VIA fan, remember the days of appolo = appaling)

AMD 64 939
on MSI K8T = $577
on MSI K8N = $655
on ASUS A8V Dulux = $610
on Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP = $700

so what are the advanatages of the 64?

MSI boards are great, so are ASUS,Gigabyte.
AGP4x should work on a 8x board, but sometimes it depends on the card.

And again it depends on how much money you want to spend.

planning on using Kingston KVR400X64C3A/512's (PC3200/DDR400) in all solutions.

Im assuming that pairing these up will get me dual channel with out tearing my arm off to pay for the dual channel kits

How are you comparing the two CPUs?
It all depends on which P4/AMD64 you go for RM. And choose the CPU based on what youre requirements are, instead on spending money unnecessarily.

no requirements (other than affordable, VISA getting close to MAX), I just need to get going again. (upgarding from P3-600 after failed attempt to upgrade to P3-1000)

Looking for most bang for my $$ using the old parts, and figured i might give AMD a shot seeing as how Intel dosent want to deal with 64 at this time.

Given the prices and my needs I think I'll stick with what I know, and go with the Intel platform.

Damn the bastards that sold me the flacky socket 370 board will not accept a return if it dont work! It never worked, and its brand new!

Screwed by yet another local retailer, I guess the new sytem is out of the question now that I can't get the $$ back on this defective part.

.. but 'local' & 'retailer' ? Get yourself stood in that shop & SHOUT about how 'bad' they are until either the police turn up & back you up (assuming you've got proof of purchase) or the shop gives in & does the right thing ..

(I thought it was us 'english' that are supposed to be 'pooh' at complaining for fear of creating a 'fuss' - seems its universal ;))

Cops won't do you any good. If the retailer calls the cops, they will escort the loudmouth out. They will either ask you to leave, or arrest you for trespassing, usually they will give you the choice. If you have a formal complaint, they will instruct you to get a good lawyer, and a judge to see things your way. Otherwise, cops won't back you up.

Different laws applicable methinks he says immediately having some 'second thoughts' ! ;) - Here the police can't arrest you for trespass (its a civil offence not a criminal one, so not 'arrestable') but here they might do you for 'causing a breach of the peace' ( the policemans 'catch all') however once it got to court the policeman would look most foolish in this respect as given UK law the retailer would have infact been committing the only offence by refusing a refund on an item 'not fit for purpose' & thus it was the shop 'in breach of the peace' by refusing a reasonable request for refund ..

.. but whatever the why's & wherefore's if its a shop then get your behind in there & make a performance out of it to at least 'try' & get your pennies back !

Just letting them have your money for poor stuff is letting yourself get 'screwed' (sometimes thats a good thing :D, most definately ;) - but not here with this meaning surely !?)

I talked them into "testing the board for faults" It still hasen't posted on my VISA so I think Ill refute the charges if they dont go my way and just leave them the board.

Wish I could find that recept!
