The problem with most wireless hardware that delivers enhanced thoughput is that it only works with the same manufacturer's hardware. So, your Linksys router may require a Linksys wireless NIC to perform at top speed.

This is a free utility that works with most (not all) wireless NICs. It will let you check for wireless networks in your area, and let you monitor your wireless signal to noise readings in real time.
Wireless LANs operate in the 2.4 GHz band and so share channels with most cordless phones and RF noise from microwave ovens. Some phone systems poll for new hardware frequently and can really disrupt your connection speed.
