PLEASE HELP
I am trying to play midi files from my laptop through a Yamaha MU80 sound module. I bought a new HP520 laptop, a Midi Mate midi/USB interface cable and SONAR 6 Home Studio program. I can play the files through the laptop's internal sound card (thanks to the help from you guys on this forum) but the HP could not pick up the Midi Mate. (I have Windows XP installed) I took it to a computor shop and they told me there was a problem with the HP. I then bought a new Sahara laptop and had the same problem!! We then found that there is not enough power on the laptop's USB port. So now I am using an external USB buss with its own power supply as well as a USB cable with two plugs in parallel, in other words, I am using two USB ports to drive the Midi Mate interface. That way I get sound out of my MU80 sound module from the Sahara Laptop, but still not from the HP. Also, sometimes a note on the midi files keeps on playing, even after the song has stopped. I then have to switch off my MU80 to get the note to stop playing. If I play the files from my Roland Soundbrush midi file player throuh the MU80 I never have any problems. Please, can someone help me ?

Welcome to Windrivers andrechina2003
Can you confirm what operating system is on the HP and the Sahara?
Is this what you mean by Sahara? Could you post the model please?
Is this what you mean by MU80?
Did the shop expand on the "problem with the hp"?

Hi NooNoo
Thanks for your reply.
Both the HP and Sahara have Windows XP as operating system.
Sahara is a model AL 096. (Yes, your site is correct)
Yes, the MU80 is the one as in your link.
The Computer repair shop did not expand on the problem with the HP, just saying there is a problem with the power on the USB ports. As it is still under guarentee they just sent it to HP South Africa to have a look at it. I have not heard from them yet.
I worked on my Sahara and MU80 tonight, but it is a nightmare because every now and then a note gets stuck and hangs in there untill I switch off the MU80 and start all over again. I am so frustated, I think this is going to drive me crazy. Please, anyone out there, help me!! Will a USB/Midi interface that has its own seperate power supply solve my problem? I have already spent so much money on this, I could just as well buy one of those too!

The problem of running it on a laptop is that there is little or no manual configuration options. When I have had sound continuing in the past it is because one resource is sharing with another.
It might be a driver problem, but this seems to be quite an old piece of kit - designed for serial interface and not expressly for USB... or have I misunderstood?
However, Yahama provide a generic usb/midi driver here which might be worth a shot...
