I've got a file I can't delete. It has a long name probably deliberately. Its from an internet site. Some programs simply don't work with file names of the maximum length.

Is XP ok with FAT and FAT32?
XP is ok with FAT32, and it can read FAT, but don't ever install onto a simple FAT partition... for one thing, it's not big enough!
Your restore therefore has spyware/malware. Not a good thing. First you need to clean the machine. How long will that take against a clean install of XP and then add back the programs you actually need?
I think its unlikely theres any spyware. There is a bit of unallocated space inbetween some of my logical drives.
OK... unallocated space is not a problem usually. At the end of the day, the 2k restore is corrupt... you need to straighten that out first.
I got the file deleted by moving IEs cache directory to the one its directory is in. Then I moved it somewhere else.
I've converted my FAT drive to FAT32 and removed the unallocated space. Now I'll backup and try again.
It hasn't worked.
Fraser, have you run chkdsk /f /r ?
Have you uninstalled the antivirus?
Have you run a malware check?
Please post the whole bsod... the numbers and the error message. It's a bit hard to diagnose what's wrong from a single filename.
I have used CHKDSK. Is it necessary to uninstall AVG anti-virus?
I moved my IDE cables to the motherboard and I get a different blue screen now. It says STOP: 0x7B (OXF7A61528,OXC0000034,0,0)
Yes it is necessary, AVG prevents apparent viral activity and altering the boot sector as XP does, would count as viral activity!
Did you use chkdsk /r /f or just chkdsk on it's own?
And the rest of the underlined message in capitals?
mskb on 0x7b
I use the /r switch. I will try uninstalling AVG and Spy Sweeper.
There isn't any more to the message. I use the /f and /x switchws as well.
You might have to go into recovery console in 2k and do fixboot and fixmbr... but be aware of the risks...
I've got it installed after I removed AVG and Spy Sweeper. My ADSL adapter connects to ADSL but I don't recieve a byte from my ISP. AVG didn't install correctly. Nothing was changed with the ADSL apadter.
XP has a firewall... have you tried with it off?
What version AVG do you have... have you downloaded the latest version?
When you say, not correctly... what happened?
