Well, if you have checked audio is enabled (strange you can't find it the Bios, but that mnual doesn't mention it other than to say 2 channel audio was an option) and have tried all and sundry drivers and have verified all the sound checks you did in post 1 and no sound, then maybe your sound chip is dead.

hey I had the same problem with my HP D220 MT, I installed a PCI sound card and it disabled my onboard audio, I tried all the solutions posted here but in the end the problem was that you have to reset CMOS, it disables the onboard audio from BIOS and since it has no option in BIOS to enable it you have to press the "RESET CMOS" button on the motherboard or remove the battery and put it back in. After XP starts it should automatically detect the audio device. It worked for me, hope it works for you :)
