Retail Techs. vs House Techs.

Got lucky (in my opinion), never had to do more than hang out with my dad while he did the retail tech thing.

Got one lame job and then went into the staffing agency scene. Worked 3 jobs through 2 agencies, and then the 2nd one realized I was better than the average bear and hired me in-house to support their users and co-rebuild their website. :D

We do technical staffing, and we've got reasonable (and expanding ;)) coverage of the US. We're Roth Staffing if anyone's interested. :)

I'm a retail tech and pretty much a one man show. I DON'T DO HOUSECALLS!!! As soon as I tell them I charge $60 bucks an hour and I may be on site 5 hours the customers find a way to get their computer to me.

Retail at the moment, looking to get into the corporate sector.

I have enjoyed the challanges of my current possition. I am a bit of every thin ( u get that in a small town) just looking for a bit of security

In house tech for a manufacturing company in CT. Best job I've ever had. I did the field service thing with HP printers for a year which wasn't that bad but computer retail has got to be a bad way to go.

Best to rethink that "stupid programmer" remark. First of all remember that none of the hardware works without the software. You may have run into some programmers that were short on hardware experience and knowledge but I am reasonably certain that the majority of techs are short on programming knowledge and ability as well. But their lack of programming skill does not make them stupid.

In-House IS support for a small mfg company. I like it. Know people in the retal biz, no thanks.

Me, I'm an inhouse Network Tech. Have done PC/HW tech bench, field, inhouse and contracted out onsite.

I like working where I do now (a college in Wisconsin) - I like the campus atmosphere like Baxter or Pharmacia and enjoy going to different offices and fixing their busted stuff!

I sometimes miss the field work because you can get paid to eat lunch in your vehicle and your hours are always variable...

Started as retail about 4 yrs ago... now mainly home tech and currently working as a systems admin for a privately owned company..

Definitely don't miss the retail side.. got real tired real quick of the constant flow of ID10T users specially the repeat ones that always say they didn't do anything even though it was plainly obvious they did, specially when the problem you had just fixed was staring you right in the face yet again!!!!!!! :confused:

I don't get to the forums much--too busy fixing customers machines. I'm the only one who works on home machines here. My boss (the only other person) works on business machines.

Occasionally I can open my Net+ book but most of the time I'm too busy and too tired to study (even at home).

I worked as retail tech during college for a Mom and Pop computer store, did a lot of custom-builds and repairs. Then went to work at Gateway as a Phone tech for about a year, then got into a little Spat with my "rookie" manager. Then went back to work at the Mom and Pop shop. Finally graduated from college, moved home and got a job as a retail tech/network tech/on-site tech. Another year and a half later, got job for large Corporation as a Network Analyst, in the IT Dept. IT is where it's at! I love it here!

Inhouse. one main site w/ 50 users (100M ether running netware 4.11) 4 satellite offices w/ 5 - 10 users per office.

In-house for Japans biggest electrical retailer. Lots of projector work, notebook work, palmtop work and calcs......

I'm a retail tech....BLAH!

I used to be retail, but am now in-house at a high school in PA. God it is ever two different worlds. I'll never go back to retail, that's fer sure. :D

In-House baby! I've always been in-house, with the exception of the small computer company I started on the side (no longer do that). I don't know if I could handle Retail. At least I have the same idiots to deal with on a day to day basis. With retail, you have different idiots with the same problem, but you may have to explain the problem many different ways for many different breeds of idiots.

I am an in-house tech. I worked as retail tech but i wouldn't change my situation. Retail is good to get some experience, get some customer skills and learn a bunch of new things. I love the job that i have now and the salary is a lot more than what i earned for being a retail tech.

In house baby! Of course, even in-house has its disadvantages:

1. If someone really pisses you off, you have to take it. You can flip out but it doesn't look good on your review.

2. "Oh yeah I installed my Betty Crocker cookbook software on the network drive, is that ok?"

3. "Hey I think I opened that Melissa virus, can you fix my computer?"

4. Putting up with BAAAAD pre-fab database systems that really don't work on a daily basis.

5. Trying to explain to the users WHY we keep said database system. (cause management won't get rid of it)

Oh well...I've managed a retail shop as well before, worked as the tech and customer service. I almost miss the variety of challenges that came in. Now its all "my computer locked up", or "Word won't let me do this". *sigh*, ok I'm done my rant!! I guess thats why thats why they have to pay us in-house techs by Armored car and not check. :D

Im a Retail Tech and a House Tech. Both of them. Well doesn't matter, what matters most, i have income ! :) :p

Retail. I'd love to do some in-house work. At least then when the "customer" is being a retard, you can tell them. When I get unreasonable people, it can be a lot harder to tell someone that they're a moron (or otherwise).

Been in retail for three years. I'm surprised I lasted that long. Next week I'm moving on to in house. Can't wait! A small company that is easy to keep organized!

Very much inhouse at this point. I work in a very closed shop. To get here you have to go to a police academy, already have at least two years street experience and then already be licensed just to get in the door, it is kind of an exclusive club. While going to the academy and getting the needed two years, I worked a second job for AMD and then for SEMATECH on hardware systems. Been to and certified by Monitor Dynamics and then got hired here. I spent 7 years chasin bumpers and then transfered into Tech Services after showing interest in the computer forensics field. I am not only responsible for a small NT server farm but interfacing with several other agencies as well. And on top of that, tasked with investigating internet crimes and computer fraud (never happens, right? :) ) and then I get to put up with all the users (200+ deputies) who could brake an anvil in 30 seconds. Retail has got to be easier, right?..? :p I have a lot of respect for you guys that gots to put up with the hordes of private type citizens. At least I can shut my door once in a while and pretend to be knee deep in an investigation and hide.

Started off as retail field tech, then in-house, local gov., then again field retail, and now back in-house, county gov.
I think I'm going to stick with in-house position and stay away from retail. Too many headaches or sitting around going broke waiting for the phone to ring. "I believe that you have an ID-10T problem, ma'am." :rolleyes:

im have the worst of both worlds and the best of both worlds.... i do retail and onsite for many companys and schools in the area. But its to much work for one tech and they refuse to hire any onle else so i work 50 hours a week for my 40 hour a week salary!!! any one hiring in the st louis area? email me [email protected]

In-House baby!!!! We have 11 of them at my site. I feel bad for anyone who has to endure the public's wrath. I've been there and have the battle scars to prove it. :p

Retail in a small shop in a small town. Been an inhouse tech and would never go back. I am just too independent. Never liked playing politics and I am too outspoken for some of the stupid games inhouse techs have to put up with. Like! Yes I can do Multitasking but can you do Multipaying? I would rather work with the public.

In house for a financial. Did retail for three years..I prefer knowing all of my users, then at least I get to know if the person's an id10t or not.

I do both inhouse and field service for many years. I like the Variety and being able to go home for lunch.
