Been there (absent the horse). Wife's been driving the minivan for 6 years and now she's tired of the mom-mobile and is bucking for the SUV (wants a Honda Pilot). The AWD is a big factor (the minivan got stuck in snow twice this winter), but I haven't been able to get her to go for an AWD minivan.

From what I know, the Xterra is decent, but it doesn't have seating for 7. A bunch of my friends have Tahoes and Suburbans, and while they run fine, none of them like driving the beasts. Anyone out there got an Explorer or an Expedition?

My father had a 2000 Explorer POS. 3 Engines (One blew a connecting rod through the side of the block never seen anything like it). What about an Armada ??

Heh....you know the Pilot IS a minivan? Shares chassis, etc with the Odyssey. That makes it one of the better handling SUVs, of course.

Buy an AWD mini van and put 33 inch mudders on it

Friend of mine had one , sold it due to the gas mileage

went test driving on Saterdae. Drove a few Durrangos. they were nice. that 3rd row seat is pretty nice thing to have and the v8 engine makes for great towing capability. drove on ford explorer just becuase it was there. it was about then when i realized how much ford sucks balls. this thing was horrible. we bought a Durrango SLT+, leather, extras, extras, extras,. i gave her the keys now so i'll be lucky if i evar get to drive it again. thing is a big time gas hog though. that's why i drive an Altima and she drives the truck. she stays in town and i'll put on 100+ miles a day. Altima get betterer gas mileage compared to the 5.2 litre V8 engine.

yeah, i own another Dodge now. yay

my GFs boss just bought a 04 Durango with da hemi. nice ride, but i wouldn't pay $44,000 for one. if Dodge started putting a Cummings Diesel in the Durango then i would think about it

So lets get this straight...

You want to put you wife and kids in a used truck with almost 100k on it? It may be more hassle than the $$ of buying a more recent model or a different truck. The Toyota 4Runner is a damn fine vehicle and the prices are pretty reasonable as a new model. (I know what you are thinking the 4runner was very expensive, I heard that it has come down.)

What does the truck having a 100k on it have to do with it's safety. Its has Air bags and physics on it's side ??

Well I was thinking more of then the mechanical longevity of the vehicle itself.
It has nearly 100k, it is a Dodge, it is an SUV (which may or may not have been beaten to crap by previous owners) something will break, and it will be expensive to fix. (transmission, waterpump...)

I personally would not buy any vehicle with 100K on it.

Try to find something else, or at least give a better look at the 98.

I really don't think there are any really bad cars any more Like the Ford Pinto, Hyundai Pony or AMC Pacer. Most cars to day are good machines.

100k on some poorly designed suspensions fulcrum points is asking for trouble. If you haven’t had those ball joints inspected Grover, do you family a favor and get them checked out!!!

Escape...100k miles will make a car unsafe to drive, if even just from the FORD syndrome (Found On Roadside Dead). Nothing like being stranded by a car you just started making payments on!

Ive gotta aggree here. Have a mechanic from an outside source inspect the vehicle before you sign a thing. And even beyond that, you may still have problems.

Once again I am reminded of a friend that bought a used Grand Cherokee w/ 100K on it. Spent almost a year in teh shop with drivetrain issues. Be very careful..

A warranty is a good option IMO. I upgraded the 7/75K on my dodge. The key though is to buy one from a nationally recognized provider. I bought a warranty back in 99 that turned out to be good ONLY at the dealer where I bought the car.. I was lied too and it was a total screw job. If you can pick up an extended warranty from the manufacturer though, I think it's a great idea. Mine has almost paid for itself in the way of POP A Lock calls (someone likes to lock their keys in the car). A good relationship with a dealer is also a plus. I buy most of my vehicles from one place (Tom Jumper Chevrolet) and also have them serviced there. They covered an $800 towing charge from South Carolina back to Atlanta as well as the repair after they changed the plugs in a car with aluminum heads without letting it cool off and two months later one of the plugs blew out.

100k miles already, there isn't anyone out there foolish enough to offer a warrantee with that kind of mileage...not for less than $4k a year, maybe 12k miles...

Cars with over 70k are hard to get coverage for in many situations...

Yeah it does, and I dont think a Helix Coil would work in that situation.. :) Although ive used it on stripped out break lines before...

Yes I know what everyone is saying but how many cars now a days hit 100k with out any major problems... Alot...

My 98 mustang is at 115000 miles, still going strong.

My point exactly cars a so complex these days but require less from us... No jetting the carb or wondering if the car is going to start because it rained last night.

You are correct on many vechicles, but not on the durrango. There are many issues with the platform and Ya_know was correct. Hope all goes well for Grover!

My wife has a 2000 VW Passat, nice ride....I had a 2002 Toyota Tacoma 4x4...my dream truck. Then, my wife decided to stay home with our first born. So I was forced to sell my truck and buy an $800 Ford F150. Anyway, I've drivin that truck at least 60 miles everyday for the past year....it's the most reliable truck I've ever owned. I had to do some front end work to it like $300 worth but after that, she was hummin. The Ford has like 230,000K....

Like I said I have 232,000 on my 93 Ford F250. It seems that SUV's are so mass produced that drive train problems are a common item. Maybe because they mostly are built on a minivan frame as opposed to a truck frame?

The Durango isn't....at least it WAS built on the Dakota. I'm not sure about the '04s. Anyway, trucks are getting to be that way, too. With all the 4door, 4' bed things that are called trucks......trucks aren't made for working anymore. Look how high they're putting bed rails on new trucks. Try putting stuff in there without dropping the tailgate!

I bought the Chrysler 3/36 warranty on a used 98 Dakota back in April of 2001 with 37K miles on it. I sold it to my Grandparents in December of that year and transferred the warranty. Dodge wants about $1000 to add another 3/36 and the truck has just over 70K miles on it now. This is what I'm basing my "will they warranty it" opinion on. It might be different if the truck didn't originally have a Chrysler warranty on it or if I didn't originally buy it from a Chrysler dealer though.
