OK.... so which would be better.... a Xeon, P4 or 64 for rendering and which is fastest for around the £120 marker :S This is getting too complicated...
would have thought you would want a good allrounder motherboard like asus and a video card to die for with hardware mpeg encoding capabilities.
Scsi and sata are nice but not necessary, a vid card with hardware mpeg attached to a quality motherboard, coupled with some reasonable DDR ram which you can increase as money becomes available
Thankee will give that a try....Quote:

On this, I'd say get a sata ready motherboard even if you can't yet get a sata drive (they take eide too) it won't cost much extra, maybe not at all .. ;)Quote:

& you might 'squeak' an AMD 64 for £120, but your motherboard will be dearer {instead of say £50 it'll be £80}, & there's currently one slower & one faster chipset available for them -& yes its complicated :D
So u think an 64's the best of the lot then? and I'm sure it is complicated :D Either that or you work for some of the shops and u wanna make me spend BIIIIIIG https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2005/03/1.gifQuote:

but then I asked which was the best processor to have.... or at least which people thought was the best out of Xeon, 64 and P4... I wanted a 64 cos someone told me they were the best (plus the Intel logo annoys me on the TV advertshttps://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2005/03/1.gif) so I was just wondering... t'is allQuote:

P4
AMD 64
Xeon..... mostly at the mo. I just want it to play the latest games because whilst my desktop still does that its quite slow and games such as UT2004 have taken to freezing it for the simplest of things :(... so based on game playing which would be the best?
if u guys dont hate me for being a dunce, which Graphics card would u get? I was thinking either a Geforce FX 5700 or the equivalent ATI card.... the ATI one seems much cheaper but I'm not sure :S thankee in advance for any help.... yes I am still undecided about what to get :(
The jury may still be out on 'hate me for being a dunce' :p ;) :D .. as this seems to be a constant stream of questions, with only half enough of the info to give simple/straight answers, but I can answer this one easy enough !Quote:

Thanks.... that makes me feel all glowy and warm inside... cos I've found ATI's are much cheaper.... although Nvidea is "the way its meant to be played", right? https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2005/03/1.gifhttps://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2006/04/1.gif Ah well my first graphics card was an ATI and it was pretty good...
One last itty bitty question.... dya wanna know my budget now and soon or my current specs and what i want to go to? https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2005/02/1.gif Then no more questions..... :drink:Quote:

I havent actually upgraded anything yet.... but I have started a shopping list.... I'm just kinda trying to find the cheapest combination to make a fully working computer thats semi decent..... https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2005/02/1.gif and I've acted on most of the advice... just kinda confusedly https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2004/10/1.gif Plus I couldnt really start doing anything for the first few weeks given that I had exams and stuff and revision......https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2004/12/1.gifbut now I'm good to do stuff....Quote:

Case:
MSI Mega PC PC865 Deluxe Skt 478 - From CCL Computers - £223.88
I may not get this yet as it is a bit pricey... but I have a case lying around (tis very big tho.)
Motherboard:
I could do with some help on the motherboard front.... theres sooooo many https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2005/02/1.gif
Processor:
Intel Pentium 4 3.0prescott 800fsb 1mg Cache Retail Boxed - From Ebuyer - £145.48
Processor Fan:
Thermaltake P4 Spark 7 Intel P4 478 Prescott Fmb1.5 3.6ghz - From Ebuyer - £8.22
RAM:
For RAM I'd rather 1GB in a single chip so i could upgrade to 2GB easily but they are v. expensive a the mo so I
think I'll stick with 2 x 512GB.... Ebuyer 512 DDR400 PC3200 Extra Value Ram - From Ebuyer - 2x £51.69
GFX:
Worryingly this is cheaper at the new PCworld Component centre than at Ebuyer...... Connect 3D Radeon 9600
XT - Graphics adapter - RADEON 9600 XT - AGP 8x - 256 MB DDR - TV out - £115.39
HDD:
Western Digital WD200BB 200gb UIDE 100 7200rpm - OEM - From EBuyer - £74.95
Network Card: Can find one lying around somewhere
CD/DVD:
LG 8x DVD DUAL R/RW/RAM IDE BURNER - OEM - From Ebuyer - £45.82
Firewire:
Ebuyer PCI Firewire 1394A Card with 3 External and 1 Internal Port - From Ebuyer - £15.21
(Bluetooth USB Adapter - Ebuyer Bluetooth USB Dongle upto 20m with external flash to support Audio - From
Ebuyer - £15.27)
KVM (for connecting my laptop and desktop to the same monitor without fiddling round the back...):
Ebuyer 4 Port Kvm Switch controls upto 4 computers from one or more keyboards, monitors & mice 4xCables
Included in pack - £35.25
and any other inner gubbins I need such as IDE cables.... have I missed anything out?
So without the case.... it comes to a grand total of £558.97 and with it £782.85 Thanks for any help....
how can you spend 200 quid on a case? wow....
anywhooo... asus and epox followed by gigabyte then msi are my personal order of quality motherboard makers.
You just need to find one that supports the chip you want
Firewire is onboard with many higher end motherboards.
Extra value ram from ebuyer may be a problem...Ebuyer is great until you have to return something that is faulty. Have you checked the prices at dabs and ccl and savastore.com for ram?
Thankeee for your help... well Im not sure about the case I agree its a bit over the top price wise.. and kinda feature wise... yeah... CCl was a bit more expensive and I kinda gave up with Dabs... delivery is better Ive found but Ebuyer generally is better for price....Quote:
