Welcome to Windriver SLA. Glad this thread helped.
Just found this forum in desperation after IE7 download and frustration of above error message. Many thanks Stuinn for your posting which has solved the problem for me! All to do with BT Broadband help PSAPI file. If I could send you a pint of Newcastle's best ale over the net, I would in recognition of your fix
Welcome to Windrivers speedwaythom
Seems like all the ISPs need to get this sort out...
I too had the same error message after my computer updated to IE 7 and tried the suggestion for finding that particular file and then renaming the DLL file to old. Mine was located in the Net Assistant file. I have rebooted a number of times since locating the file and renaming it and no error messages as of yet. Perhaps it isn't in the same file all the time as there is no chance I would have Verizon or sprint on my computer.
Susie, which Net Assistant software are you using... all the people have had problems with their internet service provider's software which aims to assist people when they have problems. I think it is the same file, just used by several companies to report the status of a process. Therefore anyone using any kind of software which reports the connection status (for example) will have this file in the software.
It is a proper and needed windows file - there are just different versions of them... the one the ISPs and other connection helper software companies seem to use a version that IE7 doesn't like.
Noo Noo I am using Net Assistant which was installed on my computer through Bell Canada when I installed high speed wireless. You are correct in that it no longer appears on my computer toolbar. I just found it annoying when I got the message and thought this would work. Any idea how to fix it.
Like you all, I needed to find a solution to this problem. Got it sorted now. I will definately be popping back on when I get the time. I'm not great in the computer world and feel I can pick up a lot of stuff from this forum.
You may want to uninstall the net assistant. I did. I find it to be very useless in that it causes many system problems while using the internet. I called bell tech support about my connection because it went down and inquired about this "net assistant software" The tech laughed about the software, nuff said.

Noo Noo thanks for the info, I will do that and let you know the result.
I know that I must be thick cannot find SmartBridge.exe anywhere should I simple rename the whole folder as old?
Dave Hill Welcome to Windrivers.... did you read this post?
To be able to search hidden folders you need to open my computer, click tools, folder options view and click the radio button - show hidden files. Apply, ok and then search for all files and folders smartbridgeQuote:

If the file is in use, boot to safe mode and rename it there. To get to safe mode press f8 a few times before the windows screen comes up... or if it's too fast, start, run and type in
msconfig.exe
click ok. On the boot tab, check the safe mode box. Apply and ok and restart. When you want to stop booting to safe mode, uncheck the box in msconfig boot tab.
upon searching for our little MotiveSB.exe I found it under the SBC Self Support folder. This file loads every time windows starts but I never have used it(probably crap like: please restart your computer). If you find that you never use the tool and don't care if it is gone anyway, than I recommend you go to Add/Remove Programs and find the SBC Self Support Tool and completely remove it.
Luck,
Thanks for the tip DruOswald and Welcome to Windrivers.
I removed the motivesb from my start menu and resolved the problem. No more menacing pop-up. I'll give your suggestion a try also.
Thanks
I'm a first time "caller," and who'da thunk that an annoying error message could bring people together from all over the world! :) I updated to IE 7, googled the error message among other things, read all your posts which were extremely helpful, did what Stuinn suggested--and voila! No more annoying message. How did you know to do that, Stuinn? Anyway, I'm thankful for all of you because now I've found a new resource.
Welcome aboard Prophetess... glad to see a fellow female!
Just registered to say thanks for all the help - had the smartbridge error message, took stuinn's advice & now no more error message (my other half had updated to ie7 about a week ago - bloomin' awful!)
Welcome to Windrivers Roy S. It's nice that someone bothers to register just to say thanks... nicer if you stick around!
WoW, Stuinn, such a simple solution for such a perplexing problem! I found my PSAPI.DLL in my SBC file, I just added a letter as you suggested, and instant cure! Thanks so much! ~Aubrie
Welcome to Windrivers Aubrie, glad this helped you.
Great Post - assuming popularity and driving traffic to WinDrivers resulting in a new user base. All of the new faces seem to showing up on this topic. I doubt this one gets a lock. ;)

You can Google for odd and unusual stuff and find archived WinDrivers stuff every day - nothing is 'locked' but bad posts as far as I know.
:)
I had the same issue and used this method. I had to rename 4 dll files before it worked. To find them all I used search with hidden files enabled.Quote:

Thanks to all for this Forum - After Installing IE7 I started having this error message like you all did. I did a search for "PSAPI.DLL" and changed all of them to "PSAPI.OLD" and this corrected the error messages.
Thanks!!! :mult:

I was having the same problem, this time after installing the BT broadband help - which uses smartbridge's psapi.dll :p
Im about to use stuinn's method, after searching my computer i have found 8 however. As i know some of the programs i use have modified versions of PSAPI, ill only update ones in BT BROADBAND, and MOTIVE folders.

From the time IE7 "installed" my Norton Antivirus stopped working and won't reinstall correctly, Explorer still looks like IE6 (but says it's IE7) and it won't let any of my bookmarks work. I get a "The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context" when I click on a link. I've tried to uninstall IE7 but it doesn't show up in Add or Remove Programs because it seems it never completely installed itself. I've tried deleting it's by the roots but it says I have to close other programs that are using it first when no other windows are open. IE6 won't reinstall because a newer version is already installed and redoing 7 does nothing.
I installed another antivirus in the mean time and overwrote all of Windows and IE from my backup to no avail.
I managed to install Firefox from the CD drive and it's working fine but since I can't get at my hundreds of bookmarks in IE it's annoying to start over with all of them.
Right about now a well placed sledgehammer would handle this problem, but then I'd be out of business.
How can I uninstall Internet Explorer and reinstall IE6? Then I'll get my bookmarks switched over to Firefox and use IE only when I have to.
I found eight PSAPI.DLLs in my C drive, dating back to AOL days. Renamed all except the one in windows\system32. All is well now. Thanks for the help!
Welcome to Windrivers Adman and Oldguy
Adman have a look here Since IE7 is an update, you need to check the box in add/remove programs (top left) to show updates. Then you can uninstall it.
Favourites are now called bookmarks... if you click on book marks you should get an import wizard to import your bookmarks.
Don't know where this message will go, but trust that it will get some reaction !!
I too installed IE7 because I naively trusted Microsoft, but got the dreaded psapi.dll message. Fortunately found this Forum (using Google) and with fear and trepidation used Stuinnn's solution, altering several psapi.dll's (There was one for Adobe that I couldn't alter). The Good news is ..it worked and I no longer have the message. The only bad news is that I now cannot use my Epson Web to Page buttons. Is there something I may have done wrong ? I have re-installed the Epson Web to Page without success.
Welcome to Windrivers geriatrictechnophobe
You only need to change one of the psapi.dll's, the one you want is to do with your isp software... change the epson one back.
