Okay, I've downloaded win9xe67.exe.
Now what?
Also, I appreciate the info on DirectX. My version is 6. What do I need?
How do I go about making sure my system continues to use the monitor/driver/display adapter that I select instead of reverting to "unknown device" being detected & prompting the machine to install "default monitor"?
Make a Folder on the GX110 under c:\Program Files called 'Intel'.
Put that driver download in that file.
Double click on that file to operate it - if it says it will install it somewhere (and it should), make a note WHERE and then say OK.
Once done, look for that location and make sure you can find it -write it down.
Then go to device manager, click on that adapter, and driver, and then click 'update driver' and browse to the location where the file went.
I don't run 98 SE so some of my terms may be off.
re the Direct X - it is a 65 megabyte download, 18 megabytes of which will stay on the hard drive if you delete the installation portions afterward.
- I would suggest you not try that download on your telephone but use the library or your son's connections and download it to cd.
You should realize that that old comp will be limited for gaming unless you are talking REALLY simple games for REALLY young kiddies.

Your system will always detect an unknown device and prompt to install a default monitor, until the display adapter is installed...the monitor is not an issue..all recent (within the last 8 years) monitors are capable of displaying 32 million colors. Once you install the display adapter, that will keep it's drivers..the display adapter is what determines the colors, definition, etc. that is sent to the monitor.Quote:

PS: Our local libraries do not allow saving to disks (fear of viruses). My son's work computer would be a BIG NO NO. BIG global corporation. The grandkids ARE really young....the oldest just turned 4. The second is 3 & can't work a left click w/o a right click. The youngest is 1. This computer should do just fine until they get older. As I mentioned in the other thread that got locked, if you have sound through your speakers, and can get sound by plugging directly to the front of the cd-rom drive, you most likely just need to connect an audio cable from the back of your cd-rom drive to the sound card. You could also double check your sound settings and make sure the cd-rom volume control isn't muted or turned the whole way down.Quote:
